Yes it is.
And the online-shop for tickets should be online sometime this month:
http://www.merz-verlag-en.com/tickets--times.html

(See you there! )

All of the ticketing info is now up on their site with the links to order online. If you're using Chrome, you might have a problem trying to open the link initially. Here's the one that should work with Chrome: https://host.convey.de/esop_es2/bin/iisclt.cia?n&OpenSession...

(For some reason, Chrome drops the "OpenSession" parameter which seems to be the problem. I opened their link with Internet Explorer, then pasted it into Chrome to get it to work.)

I'm driving in with my car for 1 day. Does the 'Tickets incl. VRR' category on the online booking site take care of parking fee or it VRR the German acronym for VAT? Thx.

No, parking is never included. VRR is Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr and this ticket includes public transport inside VRR-area.

Edit: Parking was 5€ per day for the last years.

I have never bought tickets in advance (you have to pay a fee to get tickets in advance) and have never waited at all in line.

Then you weren't there a couple of years ago when on Thursday morning their computer system crashed and queues were an hour or more.

You can also buy your ticket via the German Event bureau: Eventim.de - but only for groups

I bought my tickets online just to be safe; attending for the first time so don't want to risk any snafus. I noticed when buying that there was no specific dates asked for on the ticket. So I take it the tickets are good any day of the event? Is there a capacity limit on the weekend days that will be more crowded?

I'm sure there is a limit, but I don't believe it has ever been reached.

To be fair: it was the first time the Spiel organisation used the newly installed computer system owned by Messe Essen.
Since then the system have been used for lots of other fairs at the messe, without any problems. So the likelyhood of this happing again is unlikely.

And while waiting on that morning we decided in queue that we get a group ticket, so everybody saved some money while waiting

Okay, sorry if this is a dumb question, but does it include all public transport? For instance, can I take the ICE from Düsseldorf Airport to Essen Hauptbahnhof?

You may use public transport from and to the fair-grounds. The ticket does not include VRR say on Wednesday from the airport to your hotel.
But you can use public transport on Friday from the airport to the fair.

However, you want to use RE trains (Regionalexpress) as they stop less often than S-Bahn. RE is also included.

With RE, Essen main station is just three stops from the Airport (Duisburg - Mülheim - Essen).

Good point. I just wasn't sure what kind of trains are on that route!

The included VRR service is in fact a nice "all you can travel" ticket for the region. So if you want to spend one day with sightseeing, you may actually use the free transport for that (although that is definitely not intended with the ticket, no one will bother you as long as you state that you are on your way to the SPIEL or backcool).

Ciao

Martin
