A pocket knife is an essential piece of equipment for me. I use it practically everyday. Lately I have been using a Kershaw Oso Sweet as my EDC (every day carry). It is a light gentlemanly styled knife with a pocket clip that makes it easy to access. The assisted open feature works flawlessly for one hand opening and the 3" blade is a good compromise between functionality and compactness. The knife came razor sharp, but I find that I have to sharpen it about once a week. A couple swipes on my Spyderco ceramic stones and it's good as new. I've carried a number of Kershaws over the years, but for now this is my favorite. I've also carried Crkt, Buck, Leatherman, Gerber and Swiss Army Knife.

What is your EDC?

A Leatherman Skeletool:

I use it so frequently—I'm always running into something that needs to be stabbed, screwed, pried or popped—that I experience that split-second of gunfighter-with-an-empty-holster WTF when I reach for it and it's not there (like when I have to fly, or I'm in my PJs).

I carry a German made Buck 110 clone in 440c steel. It's heavy and doesn't have any fancy extras but I love the design. When I go camping, hiking, etc I may also take one of my Moras.

edit for pics

I used to carry a Leatherman Micra

But it got all rusty and was hard to keep clean.

I used it fairly often, but have no idea for what since I don't miss having it.

I used to carry one of those small swiss pocket knifes, and I'll be damned if that thing wasn't handy. I was surprised how often I found application for it on a regular basis. I think it's high time to invest in a good knife again.

I used to carry a Gerber multi-tool 600. It was very handy and I love the way it "snaps" out. It just ended up being too large on my belt and it took a little too long to open the blade. It would be nice if you could open a blade without popping out the pliers.

I do have a Leatherman Style on my keys. It's small, but I do use the scissors, screw driver and of course the bottle opener pretty often. You can open the blade without opening the scissors.

Depends on where I'm going, but normally

one of these on a keychain, no fixed blades for EDC in good old Blighty

however if I'm going to work then one of these comes along too,

every tool accessible without opening the pliers and you gotta love the mini ratchet.

It's OK; I've been reasonably happy with it. I just got it because it was on sale by the cash register at the hardware store when I happened to need a new pocketknife.

I used to carry one of those all the time, until it had to be surrendered to the TSA in the interests of homeland security. (Some airports let it through...) And this. In its almost worn out leather cover to keep it clean and spotless.

Red Kershaw Onion Scallion, non-serrated. This thing has been in my pocket for over 10 years now, minus the brief time I thought I lost it, bought a green one, and then found old red in a boot. I started with a serrated one I got as a gift, loved it but not so much the serrated part. Still very sharp, only sharpened once or twice. I have various leatherman tools too but they're too bulky for staying in my pocket.

That can't be an EDC for me - assisted opening and liner lock.

I always have a Spyderco Honeybee on my keyring.

But my proper EDC is a TBS Boar

the blade is 70mm long, 2.5mm thick 14C28N Sandvik Stainless Steel.

14C28N is a much better steel than 8Cr13MoV, it is a harder steel so holds its edge better and tends to be sharper.

This is my EDC knife too. I've had it for about 13 years! Handy little thing! As far as the gun fight next door (in RSP surprise): a Ruger SR40c with Hornady Critical Defense rounds.

My wife just replaced my lost Winchester multi-tool - the tools open to the outside of the handle, so you can open a tool without opening the pliers.

...also a stylish wood inlaid handle...

The key on this one is you need one of the older styles - I think they redesigned it a while back and changed it so the tools open from the inside of the handle. Gives it a cleaner look closed, but at the cost of ease of use...

Mine looks like this:
