Three friends and I were playing some 2v2 yesterday, and a rules dispute arose. According to the multiplayer rules, if two teammates are within range of the attack, and on the same side as the attacker, the defenders get to decide which of them will get hit.

The disputed situation was as follows: The attacker was Joal Kalmor, with a range 1-3 attack. The defenders were Voco Astrum and Arec Russel Zane. Arec was standing at range 2, and Voco was at range 3. Arec had played a style that stated that attacks at range 2 do not hit him.

Arec's player stated that he wanted to be the one who got hit, and that the attack would therefore miss both of them.

Joal's team argued that Arec's style effectively put him out of range of the attack, and if the attack cannot hit him, he cannot choose to be the one to accept the hit, and therefore, Voco must be hit.

Who was correct?

It's better
if you can do without
Joal's team is correct. The target must be able to get hit in order to be eligible to take the attack as per defenders' choice.
