These notes assume you are familiar with the rules for 3 or more players.

A dummy hand is used, so there are three hands in the game.

The dummy hand is always placed on the dealer's right, so it will never lead the first trick. If the dummy is always in the same spatial position then the game between the two human players becomes asymmetric: it's more fair to always put the dummy in a consistent position relative to the dealer (the dummy is never considered to be the dealer).

The dummy hand is left face-down in a stack. The dummy does not make any bid before the hand is played, nor does it have to follow suit. It simply plays the top card off of its stack in each trick. The dummy takes a trick just as a human player would: if the dummy did not lead then it must play the led suit, play trump, or play a Wizard to take a trick.

The human players bid as usual, and their scoring is as usual. The dummy's scoring is simpler: it gets 10 points per trick taken, period. It never gets a negative score.

Our own house rule is that we play up to hands of ten cards, because we don't like having to manage hands that are much larger, but of course that's not essential for the two-player variant. If you prefer to play all the way to hands of twenty, in that last hand cut for trump before dealing, since the entire deck will be dealt out. Note the trump suit on your scoresheet so you won't forget!

At our house we've played a lot of two-player Wizard, and we tried a number of variations before settling on the procedure outlined above. Often the dummy's final score is between the scores of the two human players, but sometimes the dummy wins! Try it and see what you think.

This works really well. Thanks a lot. Now I can at last pay wizard 2-player.
I also use two or more similar dummies in order to play wizard solo and it also works quite a bit.
