As I was reading through the Edge of the Empire rulebook, the thought occurred to me that using actual ships miniatures as opposed to relative distances for space battles would be totally awesome. The relative position works for ground battles, but there's something missing from not knowing exactly where your ship is relative to the other guy. And then I remembered that Fantasy Flight also has this totally awesome X-Wing Minis game.

Any suggestions for combining the two rules cohesively?

I'd been contemplating the same. Haven't been able to look too much into it, but I had run across the following, which might help:

Good find! I'll have to spend more time with the X-Wing Miniatures game and see what I come up with. In the few times I've actually played EotE, I've always dreaded space combat simply because it /wasn't/ X-Wing Minis.
