Hi,

we're planning to spend our holiday in Austria. I've been there before my marriage and loved it. Now is a great time, I think, to visit it with my wife and 8 and 10yr old.

We'll travel with a tent, so preferably we pick a small sized camping and camp there for the duration of 2-3 weeks. We like electricity and some other basic comforts, but we dislike huge campings where every other guest has a caravan the size of my house and satellite TV.

Besides the camping, what are great places to visit in Austria? Landscape wise, waterfalls, castles, theme parks, anything to keep us entertained.
laugh

Any pointers for campings and sites to visit welcome! Thanks!

Personally, I think the Salzkammergut is one of the most beautiful areas in the world. St Wolfgang & St Gilgen on Lake Wolfgang are beautiful small towns. There's a cable car from St Gilgen with spectacular view over the lake.

If you take or hire a bicycle, there's plenty of bicycle paths around the lakes, and bicycle ferries across them.

There's loads to see & do nearby. Hallstatt is nearby - a fascinating & picture postcard beautfiul village with an old salt mine open to the public.

Look at this - unbelievable!

Fantastic area with unbelievably beautiful scenery, friendly people & delicious food & wine.

You can take a short trip over the border to Berchesgaden in Germany - the trip up to Hitler's Eagle's nest residence is worth it for the spectacular alpine views.

Salzburg is a great city to visit nearby.

Austria is great. Do you have an idea where you will be staying at (e.g. more Innsbruck or Vienna?) or will it be a circular trip?

Personally, I also like South Tirol very much, in case you want to cross the Brenner(o).

Austrians tend to go to Tirol in winter for skiing, and in sommer everywhere. I personally know pple that tend tp go to Kärnten, which is south t the italian border, because there are also really nice lakes. And its maybe cheaper than in Salzburg, but i can't tell for sure cause i wasn't there for holiday, but it's for sure also really nice with lakes and stuff :)

If you want to get more into the city then i would recommend you vienna (Wien), as the major city of austria, as the biggest city with the usual city tourist stuff (Schloss Schönbrunn, Stephansdom, etc.) You should just check out a city guide for that.

vienna:

Kärnten:

and as i see that ur from the netherlands. Last summer i was in Tulln in lower austria (Niederösterreich), when i experienced that the lake there was populated by a lot of your kind, they seem to raid Tullns lake every summer due to some connections, but i dont know exaclty, maybe you also want to go there. Its also near vienna so you can stay in Tulln and make a day off to vienna for some sight seeing:

http://nl.bergfex.com/sommer/tulln-an-der-donau/seen/aubad-t...

The lake is called Aubad and there is a chance to stay there via tent, caravan or if you get a small vacation home, just nexrt to the lake. maybe just contact someone from the page i just sent you, for more information, if you like that idea ;)

Have fun in austria! :)

If you plan to settle at one camping ground and visit the surrounding attractions, you may want to have a look at the various regional bonus cards. For instance, if you stay in or near Vienna, I strongly recommend Niederösterreich Card.

If you suffer from withdrawal symptoms, SpieleKreis Wien meets every Tuesday and Thursday at Go7, Mariahilferstrasse 82 (take the staircase in the first inner court to the 1st floor, or 2nd floor for Brits; 3€ for visitors).
