You take your preferred faction and you divide the cards into ships, captains, tech, weapons, crew, and talent (and the Borg get an extra borg update category).

Then you shuffle the decks and cut them.

Then you draw as many ships as you want from the top of the deck, stopping it you get to 100 or putting a card back and stopping if you go over. You can stop any time, after 1, 2, 3 or whatever.

Then you draw a captain and place it on a ship. You may draw more if you wish till you run out of ships or points as above.

Then you may draw from any upgrade pile and place it on a ship that can take that upgrade.

When you draw a card that is past 100 you put it back and you are done.

You play what you draw. I bet that would result in some interesting builds.

I understand that this was/is how the designer of X-wing would test builds. He wanted a way to test strange builds quickly and something very similar was the idea he came up with.
