CrossWays is a game published by USAopoly. It is for 2-4 players or 2-4 teams. In this game, players will be trying to complete a path across the board to the opposite side by marking it with their colored markers. The first player who can successfully do this will be declared the winner.

To begin, the board is set in the middle of the play area. The Jokers are removed from the deck and all the remaining cards are shuffled together. Each player is then dealt 5 cards each. Players will then choose a color and receive a set of plastic markers in that color. Play can now begin.

On a player's turn, they may make a single play of discarding one or more cards to be able to either place or remove one or more markers. There are several ways that this can be done. A player can discard a single card to be able to place one of their markers on the matching square on the board even if an opponent already has a marker there. A player can discard a pair or more of cards with matching face values. This will allow them to place markers anywhere they want, up to the number of cards discarded including on top of an opponent's marker. It will alternately allow them to claim a white square which must be done with two markers. They can also claim any single space with two markers which will close a square to the other players. If at any time there are two markers of the same color on a square, another player can not place a marker of their color on it. This is where the removal aspect can be handy. A player can discard a run of two or more cards of the same suit in sequential order to be able to remove markers equal to the amount of cards discarded. It takes at least two cards to remove markers from a white square. After placing markers, the player will then draw cards until they have five cards in their hand again. This all continues until one player completes a path from one side of the board to the opposite side. The player that is best able to do this before everyone else will be the winner.

This game is really simple and thus the components are really simple as well. First off there's a really nice looking board that looks a little reminiscent of your classic chess or checker boards. The difference is that this board has different numbers and letters for determining marker placement. It's a really sturdy and well crafted board. The markers are made of plastic and come in 4 different colors. They're really neat and stack well on top of each other. The final bits to this game are the cards. There is a standard deck of cards with Jokers included. They look and feel like your every day average playing cards. The only difference with these is though that they seem to be just a bit thinner than your standard playing card. That's not really a big deal, just something that I felt should be pointed out. All in all, I'm pleased with the components.

The rulebook for this game is rather large. When I say large I don't mean thick. I mean it's almost the size of the box. Think Arkham Horror or Ticket to Ride for a size comparison. There are actually one 4 pages to this game though. Most of the space is taken up by these really large pictures that explain the game through examples. The font is super large too, so Grandma and Grandpa should have no trouble reading this without their glasses. The back page of the rules consists of optional rules for changing up the way the game is played. None of which are necessary but are an added benefit for if and when the game gets a bit stale. I enjoy being able to see everything really well with this book. It's really well done, even if it is a bit super sized.

The game itself is super simple to play. This is not one that is going to take along time either. Most games can be played through in about 15 minutes or so. It's not one that will be difficult for the younger kids to understand either. If they can play Go Fish, then they can play this. I can even see Grandma and Grandpa taking part in this game as well. This is one that is fun enough to capture pretty much anyone's attention. The short play time makes it easy enough to be brought into any gaming situation. This can be used as a light warm up game for an evening of heavier gaming. It's simple to teach and learn and even easier to play. It's a really neat and fun game that looks really nice.

CrossWays is a light weight game of creating a path. This game is super easy and very accessible. This is a game that anyone can pick up and learn how to play. It's great for all ages. It's very family friendly, no leering goblins or ghoulies to frighten the little ones with. I would recommend this for fans of any classic games like Yahtzee, Life or even Monopoly. This is definitely a game that is begging to be sitting on the shelves of your local Wal-Mart or Target. The good thing about that though is that this game is actually enjoyable to play. Sure those others are too, but this one has a lot more going for it than them. I truly feel that it's the simplicity of the game along with the strategy of placing markers factored in with a bit of luck that really make this game a new classic. I definitely recommend you give this one a try.
