I've never played PC war games before, unless you count Star Trek text-based game: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/3c/Star_Trek... .

Here's what I'm looking for (and, I hope I'm being specific enough):

+ Will run on an XP-era laptop
+ Is more tactical than strategic
+ Plays well solitaire (I will only be playing solo)
+ Represents an historical era. In other words, I'm not looking for a future- or fantasy-based game. I don't care what historical era is represented.
+ The game is beginner-friendly (easy to learn).
+ Not too buggy.

I've read a few threads on PC war games, but I'm having difficulty sorting through them for all of the above criteria, for example, XP-compatible or solo-friendly.

Thanks for any recommendations!

Almost all PC wargames will run on XP, unless your hardware is very old/weak. Usually very modest system requirements (and often game engines that date back to before XP...).

Looks interesting (http://www.quartertothree.com/fp/2013/08/23/baptism-at-bardi...) and it's only $12.

Thanks, Thomas.

Sid Meier's Civil War - Win 95/98 min
Civilization

Both games have a learning curve, but it's not too hard on the easier modes.

Thanks, Brian.

I see that there are various versions of Civilization. Do you recommend any particular version.

This is an older game, but it is one of my favorites.
http://datawaregames.com/html/mw.htm

It will run on XP, is more tactical than strategic, is single-player only, is very beginner friendly, and has no bugs that I am aware of.
It doesn't represent a historical era, but it is not future or fantasy themed either. Just generic military-themed.

The Slitherine computer version of Field of Glory is... well, glorious. There are expansions that cover battles from the ancient world through the late medieval period, if I recall correctly, and there are tons of fan-made scenarios.

Ralph,

The newer ones take better components. I play Civ III, even though I could probably play a newer version on my win 7 laptop. Check out the system requirements for each version.

Looks like my laptop has enough horsepower for Civ III, and maybe IV (my CPU is a bit under-powered).

$0.93 + ship. I ordered it.

Thanks.

Can You Run It
Very useful website, you can check your specs against the game (if it's in their database).

I rarely buy a game without checking it out there first.

The laptop I use for gaming is a Dell Latitude D400, which tells you that I'm not as serious PC gamer, right, ha,ha.

It has a 1.4 GHz Pentium M processor and has 1.25 GB RAM.\

If I'm doing the Pentium M -> 4 conversion correctly, then I should have enough horsepower. I'm not sure I can free up enough disk space, though (requires 8 GB).

Thanks for the recommendation.
