We could also nuke Wisconsin. Only two counties shaded in there. No one would miss it

County maps are very misleading

San Bernadino County, the huge high-population county that runs from Los Angeles county to Nevada, is essentially part of the LA metro area in the west and uninhabited in the east. The very light population areas to the east are uninhibited mountains and desert, with a sparse scattering of: mountain resorts, including some low quality but convenient ski resorts, like Big Bear; brutal desert, like Death Valley; and military installations, like Twentynine Stumps Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center.

The same can be said, to a lesser extent, about north Los Angeles County.

Of course many people are going to live in those areas, it's a lot cooler in the shade.

I am proud to have opposed those who describe all who oppose them as "Tender Flowers" and "Special Snowflakes".

From the title, I expected a one-word OP: Crazytown. Maybe as a link to one of the many pieces of evidence that the other half of Americans are doofuses.

The 146 largest counties in the US are those that appear to surround the largest metropolises in the US? I'm not sure anyone would find that surprising. It's a cool way to look at data, but it's not anything revelatory.

Bizarre, isn't it? Apparently produced by lawyers, but marked as public domain--the constituent data certainly is.

I should tag all my work with that. "This project was done solely for the purpose of determining if this project is useful".

I'd expected something different, since I heard that half the US population lives within a 300 (or was it 400?) mile radius of Pittsburgh.

It occurred to me I had cursed the darkness without lighting a candle, so:

This is census tracts (2010), so I think it's the most detailed data available.

"The urban areas of the United States for the 2010 Census contain 249,253,271 people, representing 80.7% of the population, and rural areas contain 59,492,276 people, or 19.3% of the population." --census FAQ

However, this is a bit high by many people's definitions, as it includes 9.5% of the population who live in "urban clusters". They aren't rural, but they aren't urban or suburban either. Small town America is one way to describe it. Article.

I used to live in that Urban Cluster. I ran a clothing store in that urban cluster. My ex- wife's little sister used to date the singer's little brother in that urban cluster.
