Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars, where you will be forced to drift aimlessly farther into the vast, empty abyss of space until a lack of food, water and oxygen causes you to succumb to Death's cold embrace.

Impulse is the new big one from Carl Chudyk (GtR). Seems like you'll love it, not that I've played it yet.

Among the Stars. My wife doesn't like it because of the lack of player interaction, though, admittedly, we haven't played the "aggressive" version of the rules, with the conflict cards.

I like it because I feel like I'm definitely building something, and the spatial aspects of card placement are important.

Yes definitely look into Pax Porfiriana but you should also get Glory to Rome as you thought about.

I like Bruges a lot, personally. I know it has a board, but it's pretty much a card game. Same goes for Seasons. It's really a card game, with a very small board element (ok I guess it has dice too).

Maybe not that much complexity, but varied games with theme and progression/escalation during the game.

I'd say it's probably comparable to Glory to Rome (which the OP likes) in terms of complexity.
