Hi, Looking for some help! I have lost my first 5 games of x-wing. In the last 3 games,the squadron I used was;

X-WING: RED SQUADRON PILOT
R2 Astromech
X-WING: RED SQUADRON PILOT
R2 Astromech
Y-WING: GREY SQUADRON PILOT
Ion Cannon Turret
R2 Astromech
Y-WING: GREY SQUADRON PILOT
Ion Cannon Turret
R2 Astromech

I think the list is ok, but I'm struggling to keep all 4 ships after the first round of firing.
Thinking of switching to a 3 ship squadron.

X-WING: · GARVEN DREIS
Proton Torpedoes
R2 Astromech
Y-WING: · DUTCH VANDER
Proton Torpedoes
Ion Cannon Turret
· R5-K6
HWK-290: · KYLE KATARN
Determination
Blaster Turret
Recon Specialist
· Moldy Crow

I only have; core, 1 x-wing expansion, 2 y-wing expansion and hwk-290 Expansion.

Any advice please.

I think if you're struggling with four ships, making it three isn't going to help.

But I think you have the right idea with adding in garven and dutch. See if you can make a four ship squad with them and see how much you can get out of all those extra actions!

a common error is to want to put too much upgrades on the ships.
upgrades end up costing a lot of points for generally only minor increase in usefulness compared to buying an extra ship
you have to evaluate every element you add to your squad, looking at its cost and if its really worth it.

second its important to fly to the strengths of your squad and avoid its weaknesses.
the Y-wings with Ion cannons have a low damage output, they might find it difficult to effectively kill a ship

If you have trouble dealing damage, you can replace one of the Y-Wings with the HWK and a blaster turret. You will need either the Moldy Crow or Recon Expert to make full use of the turret (maybe even both) but this will still keep the cost low enough.

On the other hand, two ions are really nice to have...

The guy's who've replied before me are all correct. Your squad lacks firepower somewhat, and probably spent too many points on upgrades... Try this one:

29pts Wedge
21pts rookie pilot x-wing
26pts Roark Garnet w/ recon specialist and blaster turret
24pts gold squad y-wing w/ r2 astromech and ion turret.
=100pts

With this squad wedge is your heavy hitter. You use Roark Garnet to allow one of your low pilot skill guys, the gold or the rookie, fire absolutely first. Use that when you have the chance to kill someone off before they can fire back, or to allow a ship that's about to die to get in one last shot. This can be extremely useful. The recon specialist will make that blaster turret way more useful too. The low pilot skill guys can be really useful as blockers (getting in the enemy's way, forcing them to loose an action, and not shoot at the ship they hit). Remember, this game is often won and loss on really good/bad maneuvers.

Thanks for the tips. The idea of the 2x2y list was to make formation flying easier as they all have the same ps. And I was think the same with the other list, but lose a ship for higher ps and better synergy. Also I found the 360 fire arc and the ion token of the ion cannons, off-set the low damage output. The Y's got most of the kills.

definitely not flying 2x2y again. Really like the wedge list.

Cheers
