The largest number I've personally rolled is 12 dice in a single Strength test during a Combat Encounter.

But that got me thinking - theoretically, what's the most dice an investigator can roll in a single test/roll?

Yesterday, I came up with 16. Then this morning I woke up and said, "17!" (Must have been working on it in my sleep lol!)

But I keep thinking I must be missing something...

Can anybody come up with a higher number? Purely theoretical situation, of course.

*Remember - gains don't stack. And re-rolls don't count.

I'm getting a headache...

Most I can think of is 13.

Strength 4 + 2 improvement
Kerosene + 5
Jungle space investigator + 1

So, C'mon, give us the benefit of your details for 17 dice, so we can reality check ya, and think about how to improve it.

I promise to be quite impressed when your plan for 17 is validated !!

I personally can't imagine how to get close to 17 dice.

After thinking quickly about it, I can at least get to 16 too.

Strength 4
Two Strength Improvements +2
Lightning Gun +6
Urban Guide/Leo/Silas and test is on appropiate location +1
Jim on same space +1
Lola on same space +1
Lantern +1

Sum 16

Will think about how to get to 17.

Edit: there are some tests where you roll an additional die for each clue you have. With those ecnounters, you can surely get over 17 dice!

Heh, just came back from Whole Foods and it looks like the hardcore players came out!

Mark or Lily with maxed out Strength: 6
Occurs during a Strength Test during Combat Encounter with Big Jim Culver on your space: +1
Lightning Gun: +6(!)
Lantern (once a round): +1
On a City space with Urban Guide: +1
(Or on a Sea space with Silas or on a Wilderness space with Leo)
Lola Hayes on your space (once a round): +1
Against a Maniac or Ghoul: +1

Also, I'm wondering if there is some Encounter resolution that will give an investigator an additional die? Maybe shared/global effects to another investigator; it would have to occur before Mark/Lily's Combat Encounter.

Note that the Ghoul and Maniac each have their +1 modifier during the will test. So no 17th die here

I had 16 using this method. The Ghoul and the Maniac only give a +1 on the skill test for their Will test, not for their Strength test. No monster that I am aware of gives extra dice for their Strength test.

Good catch!

So is that it, guys? 16? Are we missing something?


On another note, what's the max damage from a single spell effect against a single monster? I can come up with 30. I think.

Tonight I found myself rolling eleven dice and thinking to myself "I must have something wrong, that's a lot of dice to kill a cultist." I guess I don't understand this game as well as I thought.

MoM addition to combat setups:
3 (!) additional dice from Dhole Chants artifact (requires Lore roll and costs a SAN, so maybe more a Lily thing than a Mark thing)
1 additional die from someone using one of the Intervene variants on you at 3 sux

The stupidest answer I can come up with?


Somewhere around 55-60.

The Arcane Insight spell rolls Lore -2, +1 for each tome the investigator has.

The Eldritch Horror Wiki lists 47 tomes. 7 base lore, +2 dice when spellcasting item, +1 fellow investigator, I'm sure we can find more.
