Hello everybody!

This is our latest global campaign of the best game in the world. We play via Vassal and we use all expansion except LiF and FiF. The players are:

Matteo (me, aka teobius) – Germany
Amos (aka azalin1982)– Japan & Italy

Alessandro – CW, USA & China
Federico – Russia and France.

The Allies aren’t regulars of this forum, and thus me and my accomplice are quite free to discuss our secret, classified, most confidential and always winning strategies with you. We would very much like to get some advices and comments, since we like talking WiF and because we are still learning the intricacies of this game (and messing up some rules, every now and then).

Since we have enjoyed others’ reports very much and we learnt a lot by reading them, we would like to be very clear about what’s happening in our game, even if it means stressing some basic concepts that everybody knows. We hope to be of some help for new players looking for sample games.

Options we use: anything in RAW7 except the following: limited overseas supply, recruitment limits, task forces, HQ movement, fractional odds, oil marker costs, strat bombing bonus, food in flames, en route aircraft interception, limited aircraft interception, offensive chits (we use o-points), intelligence, japanese command conflict, rough seas.
We also use the following annual 2008 options: lending limits, land movement in snow, randomized surface combat losses, randomized naval air combat losses, aircraft rebasing, additional US entry actions 37, northern land lease, land leasing units, territorials, CLiF damage, upgrading heavy weapons, offensive points.
And we use LOC Vichy and the following house rules: Wendell’s Stalin’s war, Wendell’s Repubblic of Salò, only Allies can surrender, AA can decide not to abort or kill planes.

You can find short summaries and links to previous turns at the bottom of this report.

---------------------------------------------------
JULY AND AUGUST 1941
---------------------------------------------------

INITIATIVE: Axis 1. Allies win and goes first.
Weather is: FFFFFF, FFFStFF, FFFStFF, FFFStFF, FFFFFF, FFFFFF.
11 impulses.

With the US well behind of schedule, the CW must take care of stuff itself. North Africa has been a cakewalk and Tripoli falls easily while out of supply, but Italy will be well defended, and the sooner the siege is started, the better. Malta is in Axis hands, and the CW decides to breach the Italian Coast perimeter in Sardinia. One lone MAR invades noth-west of Cagliari, and with some luck it makes the day (+9, 27 rolled). Given the weaknes of the Regia Marina, there’s no point for Italy in sending troops to Sardinia, because they couldn’t rely on a solid supply. So the brits expand on the island, leaving just a german INF on the mountains.
While CW advances, Russia retreats in Ukraine, and rails factories away. The germans had crossed the border the turn before, and now they are hungry for commies. But the russians run like hell, and don’t stop until they’re behind the Dnieper river. They throw some speed bump at the germans, but at the end of the day, the red losses are more than acceptable. In fact, the Luftwaffe keeps being a bunch of blind idiots affected by motion sickness. The pilots keep failing their missions and often die against weaker opponents. Without support from the air force, the Wermacht can’t take advantage of a disorganized retreat, and can’t even counterattack against a foolish russian blitz that had left everything flipped.

At the other side of the world, Japan keeps damaging the chinese army, winning a couple of fights in the mountains (including an oos pocket east of Chunking).

Strategic bombardment: CW strats GE (3 PP) and IT (1 PP).

Bad luck in flames:

Every good WiF player complains about bad luck, while merrily playing, we know that. But thanks to my notes, I have gathered a bit of data to support my claim that the Axis suffered a very unfair treatment by the “blindfolded” goddess during the first two years of war:

- The brits succeded in 64% of their strategic bombardment (39 attempts).
- The Axis lost 9 aircrafts and the Allies 5, despite the better odds.
- German land attacks got an average roll of 10.3 (on the 2d10 combat chart), but the luck was even worse when trying difficult rolls: 8.3 average when rolling with +12 or less (9 times)!
- Russia was very lucky the two times when she attacked the rumanian oilfields (her two crucial attacks), getting initiative, good weather, good ground strikes and good attack rolls (16 and 13).
- CW was lucky when invading Sardinia with its only MAR (+9). Failing would have delayed the CW a lot.
- The USA got 1.6 more chits than expected.

…just saying :-)

Without seeing the entire board or how each turn is played out, it would appear to me that:

1) Both sides are playing at a very high level, impressively.

2) The Allies are doing what they should be doing, by having the CW strat bomb and invade Italy aggressively. The USSR falling back it probably the correct strategy. This may add to the impending Axis sense of dread.

3) Luck tends to even out over time. I am sure that the attack rolls will be much higher later, when the Allies are attacking!

Well, actually mistakes have been made, even a few bad ones, but between sessions each one of us prepares his next moves throughly. It helps a lot.

Here are the maps:

Yes, we the Axis begin to feel the pressure, and the units are never enough.
It's also hard for me to evaluate who is winning, because this is my second game, and it's completely different from the previous one. CW, Russia and Japan are stronger than usual, while Germany and USA are weaker. We'll see.

I'm sure they will!

"- The brits succeded in 64% of their strategic bombardment (39 attempts)."

With what odds of success ? if they had more than 80% of chance to hit 64% isn't that great if they have 10% that is a different story...

The odds were always 50% or less (LND with a strategic factor of 3 or less).
