What are your main reasons for choosing to play quicker or longer games?

How would it change if you had 2 hours to work with?

Which game is more fun? Game length doesn't matter to me.

one 1 hour game, generally there's not enough time to develop an interesting narrative over only half an hour, the game stops just as it starts to get interesting

Our games nights are three and a half hours. One game in that time seems OK to me, two is not bad although often the second is a shorter game so on average I would probably look at 2 to 3 hours as being my ideal if time isn't a constraint.
I am not so keen on games that run longer but will occasionally play them.

Is an hour supposed to be a long game?

I'd personally always rather enjoy one good game over the course of a night/day than setting up and tearing down multiple good games. To a certain extent. If I set aside a day for a single game, I'm cool with playing really long games, but generally I try to find games that are 2 to 4 hours. As a matter of efficiency, you will get more gaming out of your time if you don't have to spend half of it putting things into place.

In general, though, if I've got time, I am going to opt out of a 30-minute game by default. They're just too short. Unless I'm waiting on players for another game, a 30-minute game just isn't worth the effort.

Mostly I would rather play one game that lasts 2 hours and then two games that last 1 hour each. If there is time, a few games lasting from 5 minutes (ONUWW) to half an hour.

Depends on the games. And on my mood. And what I've played recently. And how much time I have left for gaming after the hour is up. In short, the question in a vacuum is unanswerable.

If the 30 minute game is Race for the Galaxy, then the 30 minute game 99 times out of 100.

Really though, 1 hour is still a reasonable length but in the general case I would prefer 1 hour or less. A 2 hour game is never going to hit the table often enough for us to really get beyond the feeling blindly through it stage in strategy development.

I prefer alternating fillers (20-30 minute) and more meaty games...the game length of the meaty games do vary greatly though..with 2-2.5 hrs being the usual upper limit, and 1-1.5 hrs being the desired game length.

Depends entirely on the games. I would prefer dominion or 7 wonders twice over a mediocre hour long game. Most games I prefer 30 minute and hour long games are at least 2 hour games and usually 3-8 hours long.

Depends on the game...right now, with the glut of good games that play so quickly (such as Love Letter, Splendor, Coup, The Builders: Middle Ages), I'd probably go with 2 30-minute games...especially since we've been able to pretty consistently get 3 games of Love Letter/Splendor/Builders in during our lunch hour in the last couple of months...

My group and I are the "two games" crowd for sure. We like a variety and play in a pub with people coming and going.

Games that last more than 60m just don't stick.

Two games that last 30 minutes hours. Though admittedly, that takes planning.

4 hours is epic? That just seems a little long to me. And here I thought something 8-12+ was an epic game.

It all depends on which games they are and how much I like them. I am fine with short games or long ones. 2 games at half an hour each or one at an hour? Hell, not only would I be down for either one, I would be happy to play 6 or 7 games of Love Letter back-to-back in that same amount of time.

Game length doesn't matter to me and for the most part I haven't had any game days/nights where the time to play anything was restricted. So it's all cool with me.

Does the game rely on player elimination, a la King of Tokyo or Red Dragon Inn? If so, short game.

Otherwise, I prefer longer.

Longer versus shorter, thought quality of game obviously impacts this. My favorite games tend to be 2-4 hrs.

How would you feel about two games, one you rate a nine and another that you rate a seven versus one game you rate an eight? Or a nine and a five versus a seven?
