Poll: RSP helps Junior McSpiffy draft a Hearthstone Arena deck
So last deck, I had two flamestrikes, two pyroblasts, a blizzard, two fireballs, a mountain giant, a spellbender...

I won one game.

I see now that I was too top-heavy and got rushed, but I am having trouble building solid arena decks. It's frustrating because I draft Magic fairly well but it doesn't seem to be translating. So... I want you guys to help. First, we choose the hero and I will base my deck on that. Then I will draft my deck (since I don't want to wait for 30 more polls before I finally play one arena game) but list each of the choices I had and we can see how the deck I built compares to the consensus deck of the HiveMind.

So....

Which hero do I start with?
Priest
Druid
Shaman

Re: RSP helps Junior McSpiffy draft a Hearthstone Arena deck
My best arena decks have been druids. They have a useful hero power, lots of tough creatures, and most importantly I think: a bunch of cards that let you choose from two options when you play them. That flexibility is great.

Shaman has lots of good cards, especially cheap removal, but the unpredictability of the hero power makes it tricky.

I've never tried a priest in the arena and it would probably always be my last choice, unless I really wanted to try something different.

Re: RSP helps Junior McSpiffy draft a Hearthstone Arena deck
There's a reason I went Druid in the first tournament, it's really tough to go wrong with them. My last 12 win run was a particularly obscene druid, coincidentally. You have a high likelihood of getting solid removal, solid utility creatures, solid bomb creatures and even a shot at one of the best healing cards in the game. The power is also really flexible, you can always find a use for it regardless of what your draft pool gives you.

In comparison Priest has some very strong cards but tends to rely more on interactions with their cards that only constructed formats can ensure will be available. You can make a strong control priest in arena but a bad pool will be very difficult to recover from. Shaman is stronger and has access to some very amazing cards that can be tough to deal with in this format (the wolves, earth golem, fire elemental), a steady supply of decent utility minions and amazing removal options (lightning storm, hex and the axe, among others). For fire elemental alone it can be really tempting to go that route since that card is almost always guaranteed to trade out for 2-3 opposing cards and can also get some significant damage in if timed properly. However, I think the shaman is slightly more susceptible to a weak pool than the druid so for a beginner I'd definitely recommend the shapeshifter.

Edit: "from" = "wrong." Long day.

Druid is clearly the way to go, I'd think. Generally speaking, arena decks are aggressive because they have to be, so having a hero power that can do a damage to a creature (druid/rogue/mage) seems very powerful in arena. Druid also gives you high likelihood of drafting obscenely large taunt creatures for the late game, and as Clay and Ben mention, many cards with a lot of flexibility and utility.

And right off the bat, we have an interesting issue amongst some epic cards.

Do I rush but try to go combo with weaker cards, or play for massive late-game?
Card #1, which epic do I choose?
Murloc Warleader
Hungry Crab
Mountain Giant

I thought I said somewhere, but it didn't seem to show. We are going with the druid.

I'm just getting into this game and I love the Arena. Most of what I learned about it, I learned from watching Trump's Videos on youtube.

Re: RSP helps Junior McSpiffy draft a Hearthstone Arena deck
To add some more substantive thought, I think what you need is a good mix of early game pressure and late game drops.

Like magic, removal is nice. Especially efficient removal both from a card advantage and mana perspective. Also like magic, I think 1 toughness guys are pretty lower value unless they have divine shield.

Pretty much I think you're just looking to have cards that will give good trades. But you need both an early game and a late game. I've not worked out the mix very well myself yet. Best record so far was an 8-3. I still make lots of playing errors though.

Re: RSP helps Junior McSpiffy draft a Hearthstone Arena deck
I'd definitely go Warleader here. Nothing awesome about him, but I wouldn't squander a late-game spot with sometimes-uncastable Mountain Giant, esp. with a Druid since they have easy access to Ironbark Protector (that 8/8 jerk).

Remember though that it buffs opponent murlocks as well, so don't accidentally kill yourself with one. Also don't over-prioritize murlocks trying to synergize with it, since they mostly suck on their own.

Just think of the Warleader as a vanilla 3/3 and hope for a better next pick.

I went with the Murloc, based primarily on the observation of Osirus that these have to be "rush" by design.

MAJOR EDIT: I botched the poll for #2. The choices were really shieldbearer, war golem and razorfen hunter.

Poll
1. Junior's Deck

Murloc Warleader
Shieldbearer
War Golem
Razorfen Hunter
2. RSP Deck

Shieldbearer

Okay, so since I am totally demoralized by this latest outing, I am skipping the poll every half hour format. Just play along as it goes.

Also, I botched the poll for #2. The choices were really shieldbearer, war golem and razorfen hunter. I took the hunter.

Poll
1. Junior McSpiffy's build

Murloc Warleader
Razorfen Hunter
Mark of the Wild
Ancient Brewmaster
Stranglethorn Tiger
2. RSP consensus with my own addition at pick 2 since I totally botched the poll by not seeing straight through the tears

Razorfen Hunter

Ancient Brewmaster

I just realized I can't build a consensus deck list as we go on this, so I am not gonna do that RSP version any more. Maybe another time.

I think this is a totally valid approach to handling the problem and in no way reflects poorly on the utter ineptitude of Junior McSpiffy's drafting fingerquote-skills-fingerquote

Re: RSP helps Junior McSpiffy draft a Hearthstone Arena deck
Why the two poll questions? You want us to guess what you picked and then say what we would pick? I would think the latter is sufficient; you could just tell us afterward what you picked.

Also, let me make an argument for the hungry crab. In any other deck I'd take the giant for sure, but as mentioned the Druid is likely to see lots of big creatures. It seems like there are a fair number of murlocs in arena decks. (Bluegills and Tidehunters, mostly). The crab can remove one and become a 3/4 for 1 mana and trade at least 2 for 1. That's best case - often it will just be a 1/2 for 1, but often little minions get ignored and Druids have lots of buffs. It's still a weak choice, but just a thought. Crappy cards to have for your first pick, really.

It's more a matter of how a build may vary. With the warleader, you are starting small, with the mountain giant you are padding your upper end. So if another pick comes up in two or three picks where there's a good low-end and a good high-end, then maybe the pick would differ based on my deck having enough good low-end cards and needing a higher cost vs the RSP version being okay at the upper end and needing some early drops.

Either way, I've scrapped the second poll since I am no longer doing the play-along-at-home build. That said, I am more than open to critiquing of my selections as they go.
