The common complaint about Mauna Kea is that players can get knocked out early when a lot of lava tiles come out quickly. Here are a couple of ways to mitigate that risk.

Hold the lava! During setup, make a separate stack with terrain tiles only. Put the rest of the terrain tiles in the bag together with the volcano tiles. Draw from the stack during the first couple of rounds, then move on with the bag as normal.

Less lava: Take out one lava tile per lava trail. This decreases the chance of drawing a lava tile by about 5%.

The volcano holds no treasure: When putting out the starting tiles, make sure the tiles directly in front of the lava flow don't have treasure on them.
