I've only played the base game and think this game has a lot of potential to be used in many ways. It looks like there are lots of coop versions available, but am wondering about a head to head version, where each player gets a hero, so much gold to spend on items and a decided amount of "Monster points". I haven't played enough to know how best to assign points to different monsters, but imagine many people here have.

Then it would be easy to do a PvP somewhat chess like where the goal is to defeat the other player's hero, while having monsters to defend and attack. Or play until all units are destroyed.

Anyone created such a system? If not, anyone willing to? It doesn't seem like it would be that hard and might be a nice change from Overlord vs. 2 heroes in a 2-player game, which is what I mostly get up to. Thanks.

That's an interesting notion.

Theoretically, monsters are already balanced against each other if you can use them in open groups. For example, the 2 hero set of Sorcerers should be balanced with the 2 hero Ettin.

In practice, some monsters are much better than others. There's a guy who already sorted monsters into a tier list, somewhere on this forum. I guess that'd be a decent place to start.

The only hiccup I can think of is like, monster abilities that are clearly meant to only be used against heroes, and not other monsters. Consider the monster ability "Howl" from the Barghest. It tests the will of all enemies and those who fail take one fatigue. Against other monsters, who automatically fail such attribute tests, this becomes and AoE auto 1 damage move. Seems strong.

On the other hand, if you rule that this move only works on monsters, the Barghest is a bit weaker than it usually is.

Once upon a time there was a game on Amiga named Lords of Chaos (or another one Laser Squad with sci-fi theme)... it was great games my favourite and meets your requirements for buying monster for combating with another hero(-es). ;o) ... google for more informations.

My imagine about variant is visitor who attend game sesion and could choose monster or hero which could control and upgrade. So every player has option if in game will take role of hero or monster. For monsters in the middle of game campaign or quest of course. Not only on start. Unburden OL player.

Although the monster groups are theoretically balanced, I was thinking more of points for individual monsters Minion Ettin = X, Master Ettin = Y, etc.

Any hints on what to search for to find this tiered list you speak of?

And, yes I agree some monster effects will need to be altered or ignored, but that is pretty easy to house rule (I think).
