Hi, guys. Two of my best friends are having a wedding anniversary soon, and they do traditional anniversary gifts. This year...is wood.

The wife was having some trouble thinking of things for the husband, when I suggested that some board games use wooden pieces. Rather than taking random stabs at games that have wooden playing pieces, I was hoping the community could make some recommendations.

A little bit about my friend's playing level:
He has a good aptitude and enjoys games like Arkham Horror: Call of Cthulhu, Battlestar Galactica, Smash-Up, King of Tokyo, Pathfinder the Adventure Card Game, and Sentinels of the Multiverse.

Budget-wise...My first recommendation would be crokinole for them, but that is probably too pricey; even at a non-customized level. Maybe something between $30 and $75 USD?

I wish this year were paper for them Much easier to find.
Any help is appreciated.

Top picks, 100% wood:
Cornerstone - fun, accessible, "reverse Jenga".
Bausack - easier to find as Bandu.
Art of War - Beautiful work of art that is also a cool/fun game.

Silly fun:
Destruct 3
Tumblin-Dice
Terror in Meeple City - least wood percentage, but still a lot of wood here.

Gigamic Classic puts out a bunch of great two-player games. I often see Quoridor and Quarto being recommended.

Here is a whole geeklist:
WOOD! And nothing else.
Wow, that list is pretty much all you need. I was reminded of some of my favorites I'd forgotten:
Cathedral
Villa Paletti
Oh Snap!

Origin has really nice wooden pieces and the game comes with 2 sets of rules for beginner and advanced gameplay (but even the advanced rules are not difficult).

Mijnlieff?

It's made entirely out of wood. It's a very portable game you can play anywhere you could have played Hive, it's a mixture of Quarto and 3 in a row and it's cheap. In fact so cheap that you can easily buy two or three of them which only makes for an even more interesting game.

On top of that, mijnlieff supposedly means my love in Welsh (or thereabouts...)

'sounds like the perfect wooden anniversary present ya?

You could get some wood bits like Animeeples and such to make your current games nicer. I have some lovely pawns from a handmade chess set I have painted different colors for use in other games.

Chess, how often everyone overlooks a good classic! My first anniversary present from my wife was a nice marble chess set. I love the thing, but barely let anyone use it. Once again another thread that reminds me that I need to get my hands on a decent set for the game room.

While we're at it though, I can think of a few others...
mancala, awesome to leave on a coffee table if you get the type where the board folds in half
other classic abstracts backgammon, go, checkers/draughts
quarto!,all wood, featured in Star Trek (if they're trekkies) not overly expensive
crokinole, probably out of the budget, but lots of nice ones out there
Senet an ancient egyptian game
Aseb another one

Do a search for "ancient board games" and you can find an awesome assortment of them.

Plenty of dice games in those listed, I might suggest a super snazzy dice tray, maybe tower. Could be handy for all games and used forever. Ofc only if not already owned.

Cathedral is one that's all wood (but I think there might be plastic versions too.) Pretty interesting and compact area control game. Looks beautiful too.

Quoridor is a really great game, it's really handsome, and it's all wooden components.

Cathedral and Quarto are both all wood, and pretty good games.

A nice wooden chess set (like $50 nice, not $500 nice) would make a beautiful gift as well.

The Duke is an excellent two player abstract with plenty of wooden pieces.

Click Clack Lumberjack is actually all plastic, but it was the first thing to come to mind.

+1 for Bausack and Chess. Also Blokus 3D (although I think the edition available in the US is plastic).

Cathedral seems perfect (I've only seen a copy) since it's a game, entirely made of wood and it looks good enough that you could just leave it set up. However I think it's pretty hard to get now.

Copa: nice wooden game with many game "modes" (actually, various different games with the same materials).

Kulami: wooden game, highly tactical.

Quarto: an all time favourite 2-player game.
