Well its not the great gripping beast figures, but this looks like a great way to get started in the system to see if you like it or not
http://www.amazon.com/Zvezda-Models-ZV8046-Vikings-Figures/d...

You can have 2 armies (1/72 size,, which is half the size) for about $22 (2 boxes)

Actually, 1/72 scale figures ought to be 20mm, or even bigger (22.5mm officially).

A very useful site for this kind of stuff is:

http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Index.aspx

The Zvezda Vikings are very nice sculpts. Here is the link on PSR:

http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=1205

Note: 23mm

The soft and semi soft plastic figures are a good way to go, but the range isn't very will covered, and you have to rely on other manufactures, which vary in size and quality. Also, painting these figures is a challenge... challenge to keep the paint from flaking off. If its the hard plastic, then its easy.

You might find some figs that will be close enough, but so far no specific figures are made by any company.

For 1/72 (20-22.5mm) Check out Plastic Soldier Review:

http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/PeriodList.aspx?period=6

There are lots of companies and figure sets in the period, I think Strelets would be the company that'd cover the most, though Zvezda are leagues ahead of the rest in terms of quality.
