Wizzard: The Rincewind Variant

This Variant can be applied to any/all scenarios but is intended for Solo play (although it can be done for 2 players - more if you have the expansion)

Once you have set up the game BUT before drawing your hand to begin Round 1:
1. Draft 8 Spells from the Spell deck
2. Choose 1 Spell and place it in you Deeds Deck - shuffle your Deeds Deck
3. Remove all the remaining Spells from the game - including the Spell Deck/Offering
4. Anytime an action/instance occurs that requires/allows you take a Spell from the offering, take a card from the Advanced Actions offering. The same is true for any cards that allow you to use Spells in the Spell Offering (use Advanced Actions instead).

This makes the game a little easier in the beginning, but likely a lot more challenging towards the later rounds (unless you never go for spells).

Maybe not the greatest variant in the world (there are some pretty awesome ones on this site) - but I couldn't pass up a little Discworld fun .

Very cool and thematic. thumbsup

Another possibility for even a more thematic experience is to add:

...
3. Set aside all other spells. These spells are out of play.
...
5. Whenever you play your spell for its effect (as opposed to sideways), draw a random spell from the deck of out of play spells. Execute that effect instead.

Ok... but what do with the black dice?? With just one spell in your deck, the black dice becomes useless (almost).

This is absolutely true about the black mana dice - but Rincewind was practically worthless as a Wizard, too.

But to answer your question: while it would limit the power of the black mana/dice significantly, it would be similar to any other mana dice roll/available source mana colors that come up and you don't have the Action Cards to use them with.

Why for this life there's no man smart enough, life's too short for learning every trick and bluff.

The problem, thematically speaking, is that many of the advanced actions are clearly "spells", and even the feats achieved by basic actions (and mana, lets not forget what mana is representing here) are well beyond a hedge wizard, let alone a Rincewind.
