Does the 'Winter 1757' referenced in the Diplomacy Chart mean:

a) the phase that precedes the Summer Draw of the year 1757
b) the phase that follows the Fall phases of the year 1757?

That was my first thought, but if you look at the Diplomacy Table, that leaves a gap -- the top half is July 1756 and the bottom half SHOULD follow on from that... shouldn't it?

Plus it would mean the Britain and France players would end up twiddling their thumbs for two whole years!

I don't think I follow you.

The top half July 1756 is when the war starts. Then you go through to the end of Fall 1756. Then you go to Winter 1757. The British and French are relatively quiet for the first year, then over the winter the diplomatic options kick in. Depending on optional rules of course.

Right! So you're agreeing with my original option a). "Winter 1757" comes right after Fall 1756.

Chris,

Yes, winter 57 comes after fall 56; think of winter as Jan 1757, Jan 1758, etc, on the Dip table.

Thanks, Bob. Of course it makes sense - there's only 10 days of winter in the outgoing year, and 80 days in Jan, Feb and Mar, but for some reason some people insist on thinking of "winter of year x" as the season that starts at the end of the calendar year. Go figure.
