Maybe this Topic not match here in the game forum... But...

I completely missed this fantastic game. Just recognized how great this games is a few days ago. Since that i have to think about this game every few minutes, and i can't wait to get a copy of the 2nd print.

I never played a game with this mechanic before, so i´m looking for a popular game with the same mechanic. Dice rolling/handle sheets.

Maybe somebody can give me a tip for a comparative game? Maybe this will help to wait until september.

The "Leader" series of games from Dan Verssen Games are very much like this one. There is even a U-boat Leader game but the best of the bunch is Thunderbolt-Apache Leader.

B-17 Queen of the Skies is also very similar. Another great game.

Fast answers! Nice. Will check the games here at BGG.

Comparative Game don't need to be a wargame.

I like the fact to play a game while you handle the sheets and fill them out.

as already stated: B17 Queen of the skies would be a comparable game. Additionally have a look at B29 Superfortress.

Additionally great sologames are from DVG: For example Hornet Leader

...but as I already mentioned: Have a look at Hornet Leader as well. It´s one of my favorite games in which you play awesome solo missions with a lot of dice roling, strategic choices and a lot of tension etc.

Here are some links in which marco explains the game very good. I´ve saw them 2-3 times and then it was clear for me that I have to have this game....after watching the videos you will know 90% of the rules. The only thing that is missing is the upgrade of your pilots after the mission.

So here we go:
The sample mission:

http://boardgamegeek.com/video/4623
http://boardgamegeek.com/video/4624

and finally the review:

It´s an awesome game!
I cannot recommend it enough.

Mario

I've heard that Picket Duty plays in a similar fashion, but I haven't had a chance to find out myself.

Hello Mo,

another prized Solitaire Game is Space Infantry. Here you play a Squad of Space Infantry which is send on different Missions. You have to assemble the Squad from different Soldier Classes according to the Mission and Type of Enemy. The Game was extended by Space Infantry: New Worlds.

Another great, but much more voluminous Solitaire Game is Steel Wolves: The German Submarine Campaign Against Allied Shipping – Vol 1, were you represent the German Befehlshaber der U-Boote. Small Scenarios start with just one U-Boat or one Flotilla, while the Campaign encompasses the whole U-Boat-Arm of the German Kriegsmarine. The Game was extended by German Fleet Boats, which introduced different planned but not used U-Boat Types (most notable the U-Kreuzer). It was preceded by Silent War and IJN for the United States Submarine Campaign in the Pacific. While the Games are more or less the same has only Steel Wolves: The German Submarine Campaign Against Allied Shipping – Vol 1 a political Sub-Game were the Player can try to influence the German Leadership and different Military Services in his interest.

Greetings,
Henning

U-Boat leader is different compared to hornet leader. Hornet leader ist fast in, drop bombs, fast out. In U-boat leader you have much more time. Personally Hornet leader is my favourite game of the series - beside thunderbolt appache leader.

To "Stealwolves" and "Das boot": They are also great games, but ....wow...they are beats in terms of rules, set-up and game play. It´s not everbodies kind of style....

Mario

If you are attracted to The Hunters because of its small footprint, then be aware that Picket Duty uses a full size display layout, so takes up the same amount of space as a typical 2-player game.

or have a look at this one:

Silent Victory:
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/154875/silent-victory...

It´s the next one of Consimpress and is a sequel of "The Hunters".

P500 is already running:
http://www.gmtgames.com/p-474-silent-victory.aspx
http://www.consimpress.com/news/category/silent-victory

So I suppose it will be also sold out very quick....

This one has to be mentioned:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/17484/silent-war

It's an exponential Hunters in terms of dice, time and bookkeeping.

B-29 Superfortress and its expansion Hell Over Korea have similar mechanics to B-17 and The Hunters. They are still in print.

B-29 Superfortress: I own it, but rarely play it. The rules are not very well organized or laid out. There are too many charts, and way too heavy on the microscopic detail, which translates into a numbing volume of dice rolls, each of which advances the game narrative only slightly. It is way, way, way too heavy on "process."

DVG's Leader series: I own Hornet Leader and love it, but Phantom Leader is a bit less complex and a good gateway into the series. I also own and enjoy Apache Leader. I used to own U-boat Leader...it never excited me.

I own The Hunters and love everything about it. The small footprint, the clean, well-organized rules, the way it draws you in and gets you to really care about your boat and crew. It is detailed without being overwhelming. It plays quickly, yet is still a serious wargame.
