Gunny,

Units in Maneuver Reserve do not have to use Ex Mode, they may also be released into normal mode (tactical?) and still get there combat bonuses and are exempt from fatigue that first day if there is an Extra Night Activity period.

The Exploit mode is useful ONCE you get the clean break thru (or at least some kind of hole) allowing you to move (preferably) down a road at the faster movement rate. Also, harder for the enemy to surround you if you can also move right after his regular move phase. The overrun capability is good for swatting small blocking forces out of the way. Remember, you don't pay extra movement costs for adj enemy units as long as your moving unit in Ex Mode is entering a hex with movement covering terrain.

Another trick is to put one combat command or KG in Ex mode, and the rest or some balance of the two into regular mode. The regular mode guys make the hole, and then the sub formation in Ex mode moves thru it. You are allowed to do this.

Someday, we'll put out a player's guide covering all of this and with extra scenarios that will allow players to link all three of the eventual GOSS games depicting the Westwall in Sept-Dec. Those games are Hurtgen and WaR2 (already out) and then Lucky Forward (Patton's 3rd Army in Lorraine). Maybe might even include in that guide an expansion kit extending the front all the way down to Switzerland (6th Army Gp).
