I am teaching my wife how to play the game tomorrow night and was hoping for some suggestions on which characters I should let her pick from. She is a novice at best when it comes to these kinds of games and I want her to start branching out a little.

I want to suggest a character that is involved with playing the game. By which I mean like she has a specific role that has obvious objectives on the board. The one that comes to mind is Lily Chen. Her primary strength is fighting monsters.

Which other characters do you guys think would be a good choice for a first time player that has a clear role in the group?

Akachi is all about closing gates.

Trish is good at getting clues.

Diana is top fighter as well and she casts spells which is always good fun.

I think the best option is to actually just let her pick the one that she finds interesting. You want her to be involved in the game as much as you can, storywise.

I think you have the right idea. Depending on how many investigators you each choose to play you should look for balance. If you each play 2 characters, have 2 "hunters" and 2 support characters, or characters that offer a unique skill that can eliminate banes or have one time effects.

You are an adventurous soul, i have not attempt to sell my wife on a game like this… I think she would like it, but its the learning curve that i feel would be the nail in the coffin.

good luck!

Would she want to play just female characters?

I've considered wrangling my wife into playing Eldritch Horror, but know the theme and playtime would be an immense hurdle for her enjoyment.
But if I did ask her to try the game, Jacqueline Fine, Lily Chen, or Lola Hayes would be my go-to suggested investigators for her.

It's tough to beat a choice like Lily Chen.
Jacqueline Fine's ability to peek at other investigators' non-common conditions and gain a clue as well as her action to trade those clues with another investigator lends itself to learning (and prioritizing) the game's double-sided cards and importance of clue generation.

Lola Hayes is flexible with her action to adjust and readjust her skills to be a 'heady' character or a monster scrapper.
She also has that hefty influence level for acquiring assists and I found that aspect a lot of fun when I first played with Charlie Kane.

Tell us how it goes, which investigator she chooses, and what she thought of the game! Good luck!

Re: Teaching the Wife how to play
We are going to play with another couple that we are good friends with, so I'm hoping that his wife will help her so I don't come across as an Alpha gamer.

We are going to order pizza and make it a very casual/relaxed game. This will be my wife's first "long" game. However if we keep it light and fun I think she won't even notice that three hours will have gone by.

The only game that she has played that I could relate to is Pandemic and Flash Point. She picks based on the role she wants to play. I think she plays the Containment Specialist in Pandemic and the Rescue Specialist in Flash point.

I recommend letting new people choose entirely by flavor of the image/profession.

I'd say the two with the clearest roles are the soldier and the shaman as monster-killer and gate-closer, respectively.

Though I'd say just let her choose; she's more likely to have a good connection with a character she chose herself rather than one you chose for her (unless she seeks your advice, of course).
