I am designing a game with a plan to release it over time in contained sets. Each game set will be stand-alone, but also can be mixed with the other sets for more variety and customizability of play. Similar to FFG's Living Card Games model.

The game features characters and a story which are tied together, and the story will evolve/expand with each new set. Thematically, the game is about martial arts and fighting, with heavy influences from fighting games like Street Fighter and Soul Calibur, from Kung-Fu movies, and from Anime/Manga.

So I'm wondering what to name each set. Any suggestions? Here's what I'm considering now:

Chapter
Round
Episode
Book
Act

Examples:
"GameX: Chapter 1", "GameX: Chapter 2", etc...
"GameX: Round 1", "GameX: Round 2", etc...
etc...

Which of these 5 names for sets sounds best to you? Can you come up with something that fits better? Thank you very much!

Why not "set"? It's an accepted term that people recognize. But if you do want to differentiate through your title then round would fit a martial arts theme.

If you don't mind being a little esoteric, you could borrow the term for volumes (tankōbon) from Manga and call the sets "tankōbon 1, tankōbon 2, etc..."

If they can be mixed and matched, then "Module" would be accurate.

I think the best name would be tied with the theme of your game and none of those tells me anything about fighting, martial arts or nothing close to Asia.

Tournament could be a good tag but I don't know if it makes any sense in your game. Maybe if you give more details about the game theme more ideas could pop up.

Thematically, I really like this one. Might get confusing, maybe not. Some sets will sound more impressive than others...
"Year of the Dragon" = awesome
"Year of the Rooster" = not so much

From other suggestions, I do like "Battle Box", and "Tournament" (thought that could be misleading into thinking it's some sort of tournament rules.)

In the game, players take on the roles of deadly warriors fighting each other for various motives (revenge, profit, politics, survival, justice, testing their skills, etc...) It isn't an official fighting tournament, more like a world where two supreme bad@$$es give each other dirty looks from across the room, and then... "FIGHT!"

Thematically, the game has many influences from different video games, movies, anime, and other stories:

Ninja Scroll
Samurai Champloo
Soul Calibur
Street Fighter
Sukiyaki Western Django
The Man With The Iron Fists
Kill Bill
Sin City
Romeo and Juliet
Game of Thrones
Desperado
Seven Samurai
Vagabond
Kung-Fu Hustle
Dead Fantasy
Afro Samurai
Bloodsport
Enter the Dragon
The Karate Kid
Bushido Blade
King of Fighters
Legend of Five Rings

"Tankōbon" might be too esoteric. I do like "Volume" though.

Lately, I've been thinking something along these lines for the sequential sets:

First Blood, Second Cut, Third Strike, Fourth Fight, Final Five

Have you defined the content of each expansion? The name should help to identify them as differentiated products. Just giving them a number doesn't help at all in that aspect.

It sounds, as MicroStack Games also suggested, you are recommending some kind of thematic story name that alludes to the contents of each set. Which is pretty standard for expansions.

Lately I'm thinking to do what I did with Immortal, dividing it up into "Master Set One", "Master Set Two", etc...

For this game, I think "Battle Set" could sound cool. Battle Set One, Battle Set Two, etc... or "Duel Set", or "Fighting Set", or whatever.

Or colors, like Pokémon does? "Game X: Red", "Game X: Black", etc...

Thoughts?

Recently came up with some thematic names for sets that are more tied to the content/characters of each set. Starting with just the game's name for the first set:

Samurai Punk
Samurai Punk: Bushido Blaze
Samurai Punk: Gaijin Warriors
Samurai Punk: Kung-Fu Masters
Samurai Punk: Femmes Fatales
Samurai Punk: New Challengers
Samurai Punk: Three Kingdoms

What do you think of this approach?

How about making it thematic like "Kyu" or "Dan"? Maybe early ones could be Kyu, which would indicate "student" ranks and Dan would be later ones for "master" ranks.

If they're different sets for a martial arts game, you could go with Kata.
