I have no idea why anyone cares what the NFL does regarding anything. They are not world leaders. They are not icons. They are not great minds. They entertain by knocking the shit out of each other. The next time I do anything in my life guided by anyone in any capacity affiliated with the NFL will be the first.

Actually hurting people is practically their job description. How could they suspend players for that?

If the league wanted to do anything about thuggery, they would have disbanded the Ravens years ago. The team has been a perennial source of criminals, antisocial miscreants and barely civilized savages.

People, especially adolescents and young adults, tend to emulate (consciously or not) the behavior of people they respect or admire. As long as football players are considered celebrities what they do affects attitudes. If beating up your wife/girlfriend is considered, at worst, just an "oops" moment then it will perpetuate it not being taken seriously.

The fact that the women involved married the guy after he beat her unconscious suggests that she may not have pressed charges and stuck with the relationship in spite of the abuse. To me, this is indicative of a wider problem. We need wide-spread public campaigns of the sort against smoking promoting the notion that violence in a relationship, especially a supposed love-relationship, is simply not acceptable and should not be tolerated. We need make it socially acceptable to say, "No, that goes beyond just 'having a bit of a temper'."

The league has no conscience. Brandon Marshall still gets to play, even though he's a violent, disturbed person with serious mental health problems. Ray Rice is a wife-beater. Ben Roethlisberger is a rapist. Michael Vick is a monster. Marvin Harrison and Ray Lewis have both been connected to murders, if not convicted for involvement. Aaron Hernandez actually killed someone. I would bet all the fingers on my left hand that Rob Gronkowski commits at least one date rape a week. Mark Chmura was a predator. Brett Favre was a pervert. Jarred Allen should be in prison for life.

And as our Jarred points out, the only thing you can do to get knocked out for a year? Do some harmless drugs. Drive drunk all you want, shoot people, assault women physically and sexually, no problem. Smoke some bud, you're on the bench. It's unconscionable.

Did you see a couple days ago that a Browns fan returned the favor to Art Modell?

Yeah, it's been all over the news here. Most people are condemning the pisser not so much for the act, but for upsetting the surviving Modell family who allegedly still have feelings for Art.

To me, I loath him and I feel sorry that his family got stuck with a scumbag for a father and grandfather, but at most I would have danced on his grave. The urination thing is just a little over the line.

I don't know why a so-called Browns fan would even subject himself to being in Maryland.

Yeah! And to make matters worse, Tim Tebow actually quarterbacked for Denver. Thankfully they sacked him after he won a couple, otherwise he'd have had everyone on their knees praying to beJebus in the locker room.

That's your opinion. About Tebow that is, and the prick thing. I like the guy. A little too Jesusy for me, but overall, a decent person. As are the majority of NFL athletes and employees. Probably 95% of them have never even had a traffic violation, which is better than the general public. Getting to that level takes commitment and dedication and the fact is most players are dedicated pro's who work their asses off. But the media, coupled with the owners and the PR machines accept the Michale Vicks and others of questionable character or known poor character.

All it would take is for one owner to blow some shitbird wife-beater right off the roster and on his ass for the rest of the league to see that the world doesn't end because you remove criminals from your line-up.

Vikings did that with Chris Cook, Jared Allen, Erin Henderson, and that shitbag Kluwe guy. Half of them got picked up by other teams.

Hence why the League, not just the teams, needs to take action.

The Vikings let Allen go because he's old and declining fast. They had no problem snapping his drunken menace ass up when he was a free agent.

But commish Goddell started taking a hard line on character issues early in his tenure, and once the CBA came up for negotiation, reining in Goddell and his suspensions was one of the few things they refused to budge on. He started to take some stands, and then the players said "Nah, we'd like to not have him do that because we never know when it will be -our- wife who needs to be put back in line."

In terms of the actual ad in the story it's likely an auto ad created by tracking cookies through one of the various ad companies that do this on the web. These cookies keep track of the websites you go to and then put up an ad that matches the person's browsing history.

So in this case the sports writer likely was visiting a lot of NFL connected websites. They likely live in the Baltimore area based off their IP address. Thus the ad company's computer showed them a Raven's jersey for the player on the Ravens whose jersey sells the most.

So with that in mind it's really some online ad company that's responsible for the ad or one of their tracking programs reacting to the web surfer's browsing history. I get ads for KC Chiefs jerseys a lot myself including woman's jerseys.

As for Ray Rice, the bastard should have gotten a lot more both in terms of criminal and legal punishment for what he did. However there are rigid rules regulating how many games players can be suspended for certain infractions in the collective bargaining contract the NFL has with the NFL Player's Union and domestic violence is specified as a 2 game suspension. So 2 games was the max the NFL was allowed to suspend him.

You're blaming the NFL and I understand your point. However the truth is it's likely the 2 game limit was something the player's union got put in to protect it's members from the possibility of longer suspensions for this sort of thing. So a better title for this thread should likely be "NFLPA completely tone deaf on domestic violence".

I personally would have given a harsher punishment, but here is why I assume the suspension ended up so lenient:

- Witness reports from the casino claim the couple was fighting each other (physically) before entering the elevator.
- Rice's wife has always defended her husband. She married him after the incident. If she were only after money, she could have easily sued him for damages.
- This was his first run-in with the law. He received only a mild punishment from an actual court as well. Remorse and admission of guilt factored in there as well. By the way, the comparison to substance abuse is a bit off, because players do not receive suspension for the first time they fail a drug test. (Substances of abuse, not PEDs.)

The whole thing also reminds me a little bit about that guy in RSP who engages in consensual rape with his wife: http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/934173/rape-fantasies-and-ot...
Maybe the Rice's have an "unconventional" relationship like that? If they're both happy with it, I'm not going to judge. Dragging your unconscious partner out of an elevator is going to cause an uproar though.

Last but not least:

If an NFL player knocks a woman out, people call for harsh punishment.
If an NFL player knocks a man out, people call it a great hit.

Actually, now a days, if you knock another player out on the field, you probably get a longer suspension. Especially if the player knocked out is a prima donna Wide Receiver or QB.

The NFL's handling of this is pathetic, end of story.

Yep, that's right, folks. The Iron Fist of the NFL(TM) has descended uponeth the head of Ray Rice. Now all ye tremble in fear of their might, lest the fist destroy you as well.
