1st edition:
-very, and I mean very, small board
-very small harbor tokens and player ships pieces (little plastic chips)
-simpler, almost whimsical (or cartoonish) graphics

2nd edition:
-bigger, more usable board with a few different routes
-little player ships ala Pirates of the Spanish Main
-has a misprint in goods values on the cards
-you score twice during the game (vs once in the 1st ed.)
-harbor tokens are scored a bit differently (more simply)
-more lush graphically

That's just off the top of my head. There may be other differences but those are the biggest ones IIRC.

As for owning one over the other:
I prefer the 1st edition's graphics and was not wowed by the 2nd edition's ships, etc. The big board is nice but after seeing it I realized that it's really just a side element to the main game (which is a card game afterall).

Well, one more thing: you can probabaly get the 1st edition at 1/2 the cost of the 2nd edition.

the main difference is that you score twice, as opposed to once in the original. And in the original, there are sets of goods that give you 0pts if you have one good in your set, and in the new version you will get one point if you have one of the same type of good.

But fundamentally the game is identical except for the MUCH nicer components in the new edition.

The game is great, so either version is good. And the original is great as a travel edition, due to its size (though I wouldn't expect the box to last too long)
