Vote here:
http://goo.gl/forms/iovepphGv5

Voting will be open for over three weeks, so no need to rush -- best to decide where all your votes/medals will go first

Quick reminder of the categories and rules:

VOTING CATEGORIES

Best Game (5 medals, mandatory)
Best Theme (3 medals)
Best Art / Illustration (3 medals)
Best Graphic Design / Layout (3 medals)
Best Mechanic (3 medals)
Originality / Innovation (3 medals)

So there's 20 medals to award (votes to cast) in total.

All the categories after the first one should be reasonably assessable by just reading/looking at game cards. We understand that people can only play a small number of games, so we hope that everyone will have a look at more games for these later categories. With so many entires a lot of games deserve to win!

VOTING RULES

Voting is only open to BGG users; you'll have to enter your username.

Within each category, medals must go to different games.

You're only allowed to vote for any particular game TWICE, and for you own games just ONCE, in the ENTIRE voting form. If you've submitted more than 1 game, you may vote for each of your games once. (We don't want people putting the same 3 games in all categories.)

Voting in the first category (Best Game) is mandatory. In the later categories, you may choose to SKIP the entire category by awarding no medals AT ALL. (Awarding just one or two is not allowed: we don't want people to vote for their own game and no-one else.)

Any votes that don't adhere to these rules will be ignored.

Microgames are Awesome!
This contest is going to be incredible!
I am also excited about the other contests happening right now.
Together, we are making MicroGames more and more popular.
After the success of my last microgame contest:
http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1153853/microgame-print-and-...
I couldn't wait to start this one.

This one has very specific limitations.
You need to design a game using 18 cards exactly.
No more, no less.
The game rules need to be included into the cards.
Also, and this might scare people. No components.
Paper and pencil could be used for scoring, hard to avoid in some cases.

Deadline
Contest starts - August 31, 2014
Contest ends - Dec. 3rd, 2014
Voting ends - Dec. 30th, 2014

Prizes
Tips given here and on the geeklist will be combined and given to the winners. I will also donate gg into the pot.
Please throw some money in there to make it juicy.

I am also going to publish a minimum of 2 games for this contest.
With the possibility of publishing many more.

I want to have the people to vote in the poll for the winners.
But in the end I will choose what games I want to publish.

A poll will be created for each category.
1. Best Game. (1st, 2nd, 3rd)(40%, 20%, 10%)
2. Best Art. 15%
3. Best theme 15%

All the money donated will be divided between the category winners.

Current Prize Pot: 1010 gg

Files
I created a geeklist for the entries.
Post your entries in the WIP thread.
I suggest using dropbox.
Also upload a logo pic and cards pic into your gallery and post a link.

Prototypes
I would like to involve gamecrafter
Not sure if I should make it required or not
They have good price for 18 cards with a wrap.
Around 5 bucks I believe.
I could just purchase the ones I am considering to publish
maybe I can work out a deal with gamecrafter if a lot of people are interested.

And..
The plan right now is to publish 2 of the winners with one of my games.
This would be 3 games in a standard size tuck box.
If there are lots of great games I am willing to go bigger.
I am also considering individually packaging them and as a set.

I think kickstarter would be a good option.
I know everyone will want to know the terms.
It will be industry standard.
I can lay out the rules if needed.
or discuss with the winners after I choose.

Experience
If you want to know about my background:
https://www.facebook.com/Hackogames
https://www.flickr.com/photos/hackwelder/sets

I just ran a kickstarter for Monster Deck 55
It was 327% funded with 250 backers.

*I will be adjusting the rules a little.
Please voice your suggestions!!
All your opinions are welcome.
Thank You

Why... Why 18 cards?

Ah nevermind, I see now:

Yeah, most print on demand places use 18 card sheets.
Also 3 sets of 18 will fit in a standard 54 card tuck box.

Re: 18 Card microgame contest- pre start discussion
Thanks for looking into running another contest Hacko! The only change I would like to see would be the contest's dates. If the start date could be pushed back to the middle of September, I think that would allow the designers who are already participating other contests finish their work and print and play other contestants designs in order to vote.

The chart below shows when the voting ends for the 3 of the 4 contests going on right now and the submission date for the novel contest. I didn't include the 24 hour contest. If the start date for this contest is September 15th, 2 contests would be completely over, 1 would be in voting, and another would be 2 weeks from voting.

If I was looking to published the winners, I'd want the designers to really be able to focus on the game.

Looks good to me. Do you want contestants to design backs to the cards?

Ironic. I have a game I've already made that fits for precisely these reasons. I'll think about entering.

Re: 18 Card microgame contest- pre start discussion
Since we'll have to do our own art, I doubt I'll be entering this contest because:

A) I have no artistic ability
B) I don't know any artists
C) I don't plan on paying an artist

That being said, if anyone would like to codesign a game where I come up with the mechanics, we come up with a theme, and you do the art, I might be game.

This is my complete barrier to entry, too.

I am always annoyed with contests that just want completely finished games that offer "publishing". If it is 100% done, with art, final rules, and everything, I don't need "publishing" - I've done that already.

Re: 18 Card microgame contest- pre start discussion
Guys, don't worry about the art so much, you can use placement art. If the design is good, I will talk to you about the art after, if I want to publish it. Plus I know about 50 artists. I am also an artist, I wish I could help you both, might be unfair. I will be judging on game play, very easy to see past the art or lack of art. Maybe I need to phrase some of the rules better. I don't need games printer ready. Just games people would want to buy and play. I wanted to publish games from the first contest, but it's hard because the sizes and components were all over the place. Maybe I can go back to some later. This is why I am doing this contest, very easy to manage and produce. Start simple, get more complex later. I will be running a kickstarter next week for my deck system, it is also a test to see if I can manage and run a campaign. My idea for these MicroGames can work in the same way. I plan to be a microgame publisher, just getting into it.

I have a bunch of game ideas knocking around but nothing completed, though I'd love to game jam, so if you're keen to I'd love to collab

My porti needs better organization but for now... Check these out? https://www.facebook.com/theStevenTu/photos_stream?ref=hl

I'm a bit of a do-everything kinda artist/gamedesigner (not as cool sounding as singer/songwriter )

Re: 18 Card microgame contest- pre start discussion
Yes Lucas, you can design the backs of the cards.

Another reason and inspiration for this was a publisher I met at a convention from Germany called Adlung Speile. They published 100 games, all the same size, 66 cards. I played 10 of them, I was very impressed. Pretty wide range. Some didn't have much art at all and some did. No components, mostly just good design. Very possible to do great stuff with 18 cards. Work your magic.

Yes, so if your game uses 15 cards you have 3 cards for rules.
This is important when designing the game. You need to make rules short and sweet or have them on each card or the back or something.

I agree with the suggestion to push it back a bit, but either way I'm in. I love the size at 18 cards.

I've had some bad experiences with gamecrafter. Since the games are all cards, have you considered using Drivethrucards? In my experience their quality is much better, they are cheaper, and their turnaround is faster - the only thing they don't do is tuck boxes.

Start time doesn't matter, it's the deadline that matters. I could start it end of August if you think it's better, people can start thinking now anyway. If extending the deadline to december 1st would get me a lot more entries I would do it. Who is interested? Should I start a list to show interest?

Around 5 bucks I believe.
I could just purchase the ones I am considering to publish
maybe I can work out a deal with gamecrafter if a lot of people are interested.

I've had some bad experiences with gamecrafter. Since the games are all cards, have you considered using Drivethrucards? In my experience their quality is much better, they are cheaper, and their turnaround is faster - the only thing they don't do is tuck boxes.

I have to think about this. Other opinions? There are a bunch of places we could use for print on demand. Maybe I can give several options and you can make one available and leave link on WIP or something.

Being so constrained really drives you to be creative.

Count me in - although I too would also prefer a later end date as I already have three simultaneous games running in 2 separate contests and not enough time to do any of them any justice.

I'm sure I'll be entering. I'm refining a couple ideas that are floating around in my head. Your recent "crazy theme" post on the Microgames Facebook page, though, really has me thinking about theme. Many of my recent designs have been mechanics-first. I enjoy them, but they tend to be more "thinky" while my theme-first designs seem to be more fun.

I'm excited. First comment and first contest submission on BGG.

Quick multi-pronged legal question; Are there any distribution, fair use, NDA terms or rights related to working in conjunction with you when it comes to publishing?

I will work on all that, thanks.
