I am now using 20mm Red or Blue wooden blocks to mark control of cities and towns. They are easier to see then those light blue and pink counters and they fit inside the colored ring or square so you can determine colony control quickly @ a glance. This also lets you know if you have placed a P.C. under a general or need to remove an opponents marker.

Don't have a problem with the PC markers. There aren't a lot of armies on the board to hide them. To each his own though.
