Another variant involving adventure cards turned face-down:

At the beginning of the game, deal 9 adventure cards (instead of 6) turned face-down. Then, reveal (flip face-up) one adventure card per character. Example: the game begins with 3 characters in play. After setup, 9 adventure cards are on the table, 3 of them are face-up, and the other 6 are face-down.

Throughout the game, each time that a new adventure card comes into play, it is turned face-down.

During his turn, a character can move to any adventure card, following the standard rules. If he moves to a face-down card, the card is immediately flipped face-up, and the character must try to complete it (no backing up after revealing a hidden card).

At the beginning of a character's turn, before moving, he may choose to spend a trophy to reveal the trophy's worth of face-down adventure cards. Example: a character turns in a trophy worth 2 points, and he flips 2 adventure cards on the table face-up.
