The Basics
Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation is a 2-player, Stratego-like game. One player represents the good guys, while the other player represents the bad guys. Each player has 9 pieces representing different characters from the LOTR. The pieces are arranged opposite each other with the identities of the pieces kept secret from your opponent. The goal of the good guys is to advance Frodo to Mordor. The goal of the bad guys is to either kill Frodo, or move 3 pieces into the Shire. A full game is two rounds where both players get an opportunity to play both sides.

The Gameplay
Players take turns moving their pieces on the many spaces of the board. When opposing pieces are in the same space, the pieces are revealed and battle ensues. Each character has a number associated with it. Basically, whoever has the highest number wins, with the losing player removing his piece from the board. However, in addition to a number, each character has a unique ability which must be taken into account during battle and/or movement. Additionally, each player has a handful of cards, one of which they play during a battle. The combined effects of the character's number, unique ability, and played card determines the outcome of battle.

The Verdict
This is an excellent game! The thing I noticed first was the weight. It's completely dependant on the players. You can make this game as heavy or light as you want. You could slip to the mirthless depths of analysis paralysis if you like, or you could splash around in the shallow end of gameplay. Either way, you will have a fun and satisfying game. And with a cost under $20, there's no excuse not to buy this great game.

The Dark Player wins immediately if he has three (not four) characters in the Shire, or if Frodo is defeated.

An excellent review of an excellent game, thanks.
