So I played the win a box "tournament" at GenCon.

The game is quite good but it is very challenging. It reminds me of the brutality of The Lord of the Rings (lcg FFG). It's very white knuckled, skin of teeth in terms of winning.

As far as being different from Lengedary (original Marvel):
1. Scanning. The hive deck pumps out cards face down in this game. You can't fight or interact with a face down card. So you need to spend attack to scan (flip a card over). The scan cost depends on how close to the hive it is.

This adds the thematic horror of not knowing what is creeping up on you.

2. Avatars (characters). The characters really do not differ that much (they are keyed to the different symbols) as they only get one unique class card in your starting deck. The class cards are pretty useful though.

3. Strikes (replaced wounds). The strikes are quite fun as they are deadly. The aliens attack your avatar and if your collected damage equals thier health rating-- they die. Strikes stay out of your decks next to the avatar.

The cards!

The 600 cards are all mixed together in seemingly random packs. This was frustrating to seperate.
Tip: there are small mission names on the bottom of most cards- seperate according to that. If their isn't small mission text on the bottom- then seperate by title subset.

I bought 600 ultra pro premium sleeves. They are too tight and bend the cards. Be careful here. If someone knows what sleeves to use, I'd appreciate it.

I play the Marvel Legendary game and if the cards are the same size, then just go with "penny sleeves" for the whole set. They fit just fine since the cards are about the same size as Magic the Gathering cards.

Well, I'm quite happy that the game is challenging - I do like hard games where you have to get the best of you to win. The not-so-significant role of avatars is slightly disappointing though.

What is your opinion of the artwork and have you tried the game with hidden agendas? Do you see any appropriate ways to play as a traitor?

I have only played the one time so far. I also enjoy hard games, so I'm happy.

As for artwork- it is quite good. All of it is in the graphic novel family, but there are some varied styles. I feel it was the right way to go (rather than lame movie grabs).

We loved it.

My two sons and I were in the win-a-box tournament. We got an unlucky hazard draw and ended up blowing up the Nostromo Even with a 60% chance to win the box we failed ;p Had a great time though. I really like the story aspect of the missions ans the face down cards for alien "blips" as I call them.

The one thing I absolutely hate is the tiny little light colored text for separating mission cards. Man that was a pain in the neck!

I "think" I have all the cards, but I'll have to do a thorough check tonight. It would be nice if there was a card list separated by group.

Thanks!

What I meant though was like a list of what cards were in each of those 12 different Hive mini decks. That's the separation issue I was having. Of course my eyes aren't what they used to be. I guess once I separate them a few times I'll get the hang of it.

I used dragon shields for Legendary.
I assume the cards are the same size, but who knows.

Dragon Shields work perfect. Sorting the decks was a little more tedious than legendary. The art work is just awesome! Going to try my first solo play later today.

Anyone have a clue as to what the cards with just the greyed out legendary symbol on them are for? I must have 60 some odd seemingly pointless cards

My guess was if you wanted to mix Legendary Marvel and Legendary Encounters cards into the "Hero" deck? So you wouldn't know what was coming up? Throw 20 or so into that.

Edit: Just noticed that the Hero cards were blue backed. Yeah, don't know.

Good thought, but there are dividers included (wider cards that will stand out between sections, like in Legendary).

The ones he's asking about are the same size as the other cards. When I found 3 at the end of a pack, I thought they might have been filler on the card sheets but then I kept finding more and more, so I don't know.

Nah, you get dividers. These are the same size as the game cards, are blue backed on one side, with a greyed out legendary on the other. It's just odd to have so many of them included with the game for no reason.

Do all of the cards still fit in the box after they are sleeved? Half of my games account for sleeved cards and still fit nicely (Smash Up being a great example). The other half don't which is a total pain (DC Deck Builder for instance).

The box is about the same size as the villains box. Looks to be more than enough room for sleeved cards and some expansions.

Were they on the front and back of each of the mini packs of cards? Each shrink wrapped pack of cards in the Villains game came with a top card and a bottom card that just had the Legendary logo on them. They were nothing more than protection in case of dings or scratches during shipping. It would scratch the useless top card instead of one of your good game cards.

Sleeves - I used FFG's star wars art sleeves for the whole thing.
They fit in the box no problem, with what seems like enough room left over for a couple expansions (at least).
I picked three different ones, so when things start mixing together I can easily tell Strikes from Hive from Characters.
(( This only works 95% sadly - a couple of the Hive cards can end up in the player's deck, so I have to keep a few 'character' sleeves around for that. Or I'll give up on the different-art idea and just make everything uniform. ))

Game - really enjoy the flavor and the atmosphere. It's hard, but fun.
Roles - while the individual avatars don't affect much (no always-on ability), the role cards are pretty awesome.
Agendas - have not played with these yet.
# of players - 2 to 3 is best, 1 and 4 are just fine, 5 is really not recommended.

I played a solo game last night and chose the Auriga and Betty for my setup. The power of Coordinate is lost in such a game, but the aliens move through the hive so slowly that it kind of balances out.
Chose the Mercenary role (seemed fitting) and the ability to swap recruit for attack whenever the 'Prepared for Anything' card came up won me the game.
Almost did too well for my own good, actually. Completed Objective 2 before either of its Event cards showed up, so four HQ locations ended up getting covered by the end of the game (the Queen was the second-to-last hive card).

I also played the win-a-box events at Gen Con. Five player games are seriously brutal. Think about it - by the time the first player is on their second turn, there is probably an alien in the combat zone. And all they have is a hand of grunts and specialists.

Cards - yup, reading the mission names at the bottom of them can be a pain. But doing so is important, since there are Events in the drone deck, facehuggers in the strike deck, and so on (i.e. you cannot sort by pic/name).
I'm tempted to use a sharpie on the bottom corner of the sleeve, to mark 1, 2, 3, D. We'll see how tear-down goes after my next game or two.

And yeah, there are a fair number of 'blanks'. My best guess (based on years working for AEG on the Warlord ccg) is that they were filler on the card sheets sent to the printer (usually 110 per sheet) in addition to promos or the dividers.

Random question. I'm trying to rearrange my game shelf and pick this game up. Is the box size the same as that of Legendary Villains or bigger/smaller? Thanks in advance.

Blank cards - I am presuming, as already mentioned, that they're to fill up the sheet so they can have several copies of that sheet/packet to make the correct multiples of cards. I have no idea why they felt this was necessary, I've never seen this in such quantities before.

Box - I don't have Legendary: Villains, but the original Legendary box is very square and this is very rectangular. A little wider and longer than the Dark City box.

Guys, just today I learned of this game's existence while browsing my local game store!
What a cool surprise to flip the box over and see Parker staring up from his card! Dang, they're incorporating the films in the game!
Huge fan of the first two films and now this game. Also sounds self-contained except if I want to someday venture to the AvP expansion, and I probably will.

I'm a penny sleeve fan for large-quantity games, so this is good to read!

Can't wait to play this and am looking forward to the tense, tough, and unknowing gameplay!
