The box content isn't much to look at. The map board is a poorly drawn duck pond with a small island in the middle (on which there's a temple - these Ducks are religious) and a couple ship wrecks.
Each player takes control over a tribe of ducks (four ducks) and each turn the players' take turn giving their ducks different orders. Perhaps one duck will head out to catch some fish. Fish is good cause it heals wounds and if you give five fishes to the crazy laboratory duck who lives beneath your nest (every self-respecting tribe of ducks needs a mad scientist) he'll give you something in return - maybe an axe or a hand grenade.
Your second duck might head out to the shark infested ship wrecks to search for goodies. If you're lucky enough to avoid the shark you can find anything from a surfboard to a bazooka. Or maybe turn into Terminator Duck. Your ducks can transform into all kinds of famous ducks. Yes, even Donald Duck.
The third duck might head out to the temple to pray. Perhaps the gods of Duckdom will send him on a sacred questm which will grant him... something.
The fourth duck has the option of either staying at home, trying to lay and hatch an egg (more ducks for the tribe!) or just heading out into the pond and kicking his opponents ass. Of course, he'll probably want a hand gun or something before engaging the enemy.
Ultra Ducks is a war game. It could easily be compared to urban street gangs fighting over who's turf it is.
On top of all the fighting a random event card is drawn each turn. Perhaps the pond will freeze (ducks with ice skates will rule the pond) or an asteroid might hit the pond - anything can happen.
There are different scenarios like capture the flag, score the most points etc. But mostly it's about having the last duck standing (swimming?).
The idea of the game is brilliant and I enjoyed it very much the first few times. But it's quite slow and when people start playing it safe to avoid getting wiped out you're in for a very long game. Gathers dust nowadays...
Don´t play this one with serious gamers. I´ve had the most fun with this one on late nights after several beers - and as such a game it´s sometimes great.
One example of our level of play is the names of one of the duck team:
Duck nr - Duck name
1 - Duck nr 3
2 - Duck nr 1
3 - Duck nr 4
4 - Duck nr 2
This opens up for confusion - especially when a duck gets transfered to another team, thus getting a third "number".
