Introduction

Fundamentals. You need Influence. You need a way to get rid of their Influence. If we look at quality dudes, the Sheriff's office stands out - angels among mere men, mostly. If we look at the rules, shootouts are repeatable, accessible tools for lowering Influence - send those opposing dudes to their justly earned final reward. So, let's ring the bell and summon the faithful to a fire and brimstone sermon about the coming Judgement.

And remind them your pale horse will stand eleven hands high.

I ran a weaker variant of this at Gencon 2014 on Friday coming in 3 wins, 2 losses for 16th place. It is inspired by a deck I ran in the old game. Shoots well, but takes some practice and careful play.

Starting Posse (3)

1 Philip Swinford
1 Tommy Harden
1 Prescott Utter

Net starting rock: 19 - (3 + 5 + 5) = 6 remaining
Net producion: (3 - 1) = +2 income
Influence: 5 (3 w/ Utter alone)
Best shooting: 1 stud, 4 draw (Prescott Utter leads)

Against Morgan, consider starting an additional dude, one of the copies of Lucinda "Lucy" Clover. Against Sloane, consider replacing Utter with Wendy.

Aces (14)

4 Lucinda "Lucy" Clover
1 Bank of California
2 Pony Express
3 Pair of Six-Shooters
3 Hired Guns
1 Lady Luck

This is a Dead Man's Hand deck, but we'll stack Aces and Eights for early Full House and Four of a Kind. Here, we have Lucy Clover as an easy cycle card, cheap and can be let back into your deck on upkeep. Deeds are utility, so too Goods - pity the poor Cheatin' opponent here as they run the real risk of a high hand rank. Hired Guns is easily played most turns and suits Steven Wiles nicely.

Eights (14)

4 Steven Wiles
2 Circle M Ranch
1 Pat's Perch
3 Quickdraw Handgun
3 Bounty Hunter
1 Reserves

Wiles is a cycle card like Lucy Clover, but is also a powerful swing dude. Don't throw him down lightly; reserve him for his best moment if you can. Utility Deeds and punishing Goods help too. A big card here is Bounty Hunter. Prescott Utter easily makes others Wanted with his high Influence. And you can hit them at home with it, too - lure them into playing their Make The Smart Choice earlier, then visit them where they bunk.

Jacks (10)

2 Clint Ramsey
2 Jackson's Strike
2 Undertaker
2 Buffalo Rifle
2 A Coach Comes to Town

We'll try not to play the deeds - needed for Dead Man's Hand, after all. Get a good dude with the Rifle to Town Square; Tommy is an excellent choice as his trait is always useful. Such a dude helps control the town and is insurance against Pistol Whips.

The deeds here never hit play as they are part of the value structure. The other things are just tools to help out should you need them. Jacks in a Dead Man's Hand are tertiary value cards; a set is useful, but you're mostly Aces and Eights early.

Other Cards (11)

1 Andreas Andregg
1 Xiong "Wendy" Cheng
1 Clyde Owens
1 Olivia Jenks
1 Ramiro Mendoza
1 Gomorra Parish
1 Yan Li's Tailoring
2 Bottom Dealin'
2 The Stakes Just Rose

... and 2 Jokers, of course.

We fill out our set with solid additional dudes any one of whom would add a lot to our game at any point. A couple of high utility deeds help fill things in, too. And our last 4 slots? Some anti-Cheatin' and power shootout actions, but you might feel we've got enough to hurt the dirty Cheaters already. Put in more of The Stakes Just Rose if nothing else - Prescott loves 'em. Or a Pearl-handled Revolver. Sun In Yer Eyes. Unprepared. Pinned Down. One Good Turn. Lots of options - use it to adapt to your metagame environment.

Now go fill those pine boxes.

Highlight of playing this at Gencon? Dogs on Dogs match finds two Prescott Utters in a shootout in Town Square with the entire Sheriff's office on both side. 9 Draw on both.

I turn a Dead Man's Hand. He loses a couple. "Go again?" "Sure."

Dead Man's Hand again.

Reloaded Shooter, Eric?
When we were in Kublacon a while back, we took on 'challenge decks' for Portland's Melee in the Maze. In that spirit, I give you...

... Chess/mobility deck

What substitutions would you make if you were to put this together from a single base set?

Hmm... it won't work as well. But hey, try;

2 Lucinda "Lucy" Clover -> 2 Clementine Lepp
1 Pair of Six-Shooters -> (no good choice, so utility card) 1 Pistol Whip
1 Hired Guns -> 1 Lady Luck

2 Steven Wiles -> 2 The Ghostly Gun
1 Quickdraw Handgun -> (no good choice, so utility card) 1 Pistol Whip
1 Bounty Hunter -> 1 Reserves

Would you replace any cards from this list with any from the first expansion?

I run a very similar build. Make em Sweat fits in nicely. Works well with a stacked Prescott. Hoping mine plays just as well at an upcoming tourney.
