Hey guys, I was just wondering if there were a medium to heavy game out there with a zoo theme? I have looked into Zooloretto, but have not yet played it. Some reviews say it is light on strategy.

Does it have to be Zoo or can it just be animals? Dominant Species is a heavy game where you are evolving various species of animals.

Zooloretto is a boardgame version of Coloretto. Try Coloretto first (you can play it online solo at http://www.marquand.net/index.php?topic=coloretto), then decide if you want something a bit more complex.

I second O Zoo le Mio. It's better and more strategic, more of a middle-weight game, while Zooloretto is really a family game.

Dominant Species is definitely on my want list, but I am looking for a game that would interest my wife. I think an animal theme is fine, but it would have to have animals that actually exist.

But, at least in the zoo lo IMO version, there's a huge rich-get-richer thing going on that you might need to houserule. So check out the discussions on that game's page.

It is odd no one has created a good deep zoo simulator. Running a zoo must be a hectic time with plenty to to do to stay afloat, which makes a good game. Feeding, buying, multiplying, additions, people, it's all in there for a good deep game.hmm

Makes me think of Agricola, actually. There's feeding, buying, multiplying, additions, people, and it's one of the all time greatest medium to heavy weight games.

Dungeon Petz isn't exactly zoo-themed, but its the closest thing I can think of. Buy animals, manage their needs, then eventually sell them for points and money. Really good game, especially for animal-lovers!

Perhaps Reef Encounter, if you don't mind animals of the aquatic variety.
