Vampires have more class and more brains, while also eating fewer brains. Also, vampires are smart enough to play boardgames, while zombies aren't.

Win: vampires.

Wendell got it in one. Also, I'm sick of zombies being over-used. Have vampires been overdone? Yes! But not as much are zombies are currently...

These are not the origins of the ideas, but in 20th/21st-century pop culture:

Vampires are a mythical reflection of extractive elites. They represent the horrifying, exploitative behavior of aristocrats who are not aristocrats, men and women above the law, careless of the welfare of their supposed inferiors, indulging appetites for individual financial, political, and cultural power to the disadvantage of humanity.

Zombies are a mythical reflection of the revolutionary potential of dispossessed masses. They intimate an uprising against the current holders of privilege and power, an overturning of the status quo, and a "leveling" of humanity to a lowest common denominator, itself subhuman for its lack of rank.

I find these to be equally interesting scenarios. I prefer pre-Anne Rice vampires and voodoo-style zombies. Also, I voted for vampires, because they make more interesting characters, and because of the current zombie glut in gaming.

I voted for zombies.

Yes, both are over-used tropes.

And all other things being equal, an individual vampire is more interesting. Certainly more powerful. A single vampire is a threat, zombies have to be in a mob. Vampires can manipulate, have plots, plans. Zombies tend to be mindless.

And hey, I've liked stories/movies/games about both.

But sometimes, zombies can be cool, interesting, and have plans. See the movie Warm Bodies.

And zombies have never, ever sparkled.

I vote Zombies because I find vampires often disappointing in game mechanics. They're usually just extra powerful humans rather than actual otherworldly things. Zombies have a certain feel to them that lends itself rather well to (some certain kinds of) game mechanics in a way that I enjoy (though I certainly understand that the tendency for so many zombie games to be so similar can easily annoy people who don't like them in the first place).

Outside the context of gaming, I would also choose zombies, simply because I certainly wouldn't want to be either and I would have a better chance fighting off a dumb zombie than a smart vampire

I tasted brains once. Sheep brains, at a banquet in Mongolia. Didn't realize it was brains till after I'd eaten it. Not bad, but I'm not ready for the zombie diet.

Vampires are a type of Zombie. In original vampire stories, way before Bram Stoker, vampires were simply living/undead corpses much as zombies are today.

I suppose vampires could be seen as a more evolved zombie sub species these days.

But surely that's distinct from the original zombi, which is a corpse re-animated and controlled by a voodoo practitioner.
