I gather the original iteration of this game, Wings of War, could be played without miniatures, as a card game. Is that possible in its current version, or is Wings of Glory miniatures only?

They removed the plane cards from Wings of Glory, to force you to buy the (much more profitable) miniatures if you want to play it...

It's a miniatures-only game now.

To be clear, you CAN play Wings of Glory without minis. The minis carry no markers that you can't use the accompanying cards for. You just can't BUY Wings of Glory without miniatures.

I have a travel set in my glove box that is just cards. Four plane cards, their maneuver decks, and a damage deck.

Wings of War Famous Aces is till around if you dig a bit. All you need to play.

And while you still have to buy the minis, a scanner, some cardstock, and printer can turn that one mini into many, many airplane cards for bigger battles without a big investment.

And as a clarification--

This is not true. They did NOT 'remove the plane cards." Each miniature's deck still has a plane card, just like the originals in Wings of War, and you can play the game with the card instead of the miniatures. (And in fact, the card is very useful even with the miniatures, when planes start to overlap.)

What changed was no longer selling the "Box/cards only" version, like Famous Aces and Burning Drachens (and "Fire from the Sky for WW2").
They found there was a lot of confusion when they had both, and since the miniatures outsold the 'box only' version by many times, it made sense to focus on the stuff you sell a lot more of.

I liked having both, because with the boxes (and booster packs, which would put a different plane model or two out with their maneuver decks) you could expand your collection of planes faster than miniature production allows, and there are alternatives (models, 3-D printing) that one could get to bring these to life with the other minies.

I actually have a couple Famous Aces and at least one Watch Your Back still in shrink, if anyone really wants those. (Just PM me.)

How many of their audience played with the cards vs. with the miniatures? I will bet relatively few played with the cards, making that area less important.
