Hi fellow geeks,

I have a 2 week holiday coming up and I want to take a small game with me to play with my other half when we just want to take a break and relax in the hotel room.

I have to transport the game so a card or dice game seems most logical.

The game should be quick to play, 30 minutes on average and easy to grasp the rules after a couple of games.

Thank you!

Coöp: Hanabi
Competitive: Schotten Totten

Alternatively:
A set of dice with Reiner Knizia's book Dice Games Properly Explained.
A deck of cards with David Parlett's book Penguin Encyclopedia of Card Games.

If you're only playing 2 player you could look at Hive Pocket. Very portable and hard-wearing.

Hive is a good choice. A few others: Star Realms, if you can find a copy. Small, rules-light, easy to understand & to play. You could also bring Love Letter and Bananagrams, and still have room left over.

They're all different kind of things. Hive is an abstract game, without cards or dice, like checkers. Star Realms is head to head attacking. Love Letter is a simple card game, featuring a lot of guessing. Bananagrams is (duh) a word-making game, with simultaneous play. If money were no object, I would suggest bringing all 4. They wouldn't take up much space. Otherwise, take the one(s) your gaming partner is most likely going to want to play.

I play games not to win, it's the gathering that's important - Thanks for the tip Cate108!

+1 Star Realms. Such a good game for a quick, and light deck-building game. It's cheap, cards only and you'll have plenty of fun and enough to get you hooked.

The usual tried and tested for my case:
- Archaeology: The Card Game
- Port Royal
- Aliens: This Time It's War (highly thematic free PnP)
- Province (not sure how widely available this is)
- Piñata or even better Balloon Cup
- Qwirkle (get the travel edition - comes with travel-size bag)
- Biblios
- Guildhall

Games that I've never tried:
- Pagoda (has a board, wooden pieces and tiles - easy enough to repackaged for travel)

Please update us on what you're finally getting yeah.

Jaipur is an amazing 2-player game with a really small footprint. My girlfriend and I love it, I can highly recommend it
