Gentlemen,

a question for those with experience.
I have yet to play with flagships, but was wondering if anybody had considered replacing Warsuns by Flagships altogether - essentially replacing the WarSun stats with the stats of the flagship, allowing players to build 2 such WarSun/flagships, and requiring the WarSun Tech before...

I like the idea of having different warsuns for each race, but before I commit to testing this with my group (we meet once in every century...) I'd like to know if somebody already gave this a try.

Eager to hear comments.

Flagships are mostly just nerfed War Suns. They are often not a "must buy" RAW. If you require War Sun tech to build Flagships, then it is difficult to justify the cost.

As an alternative, you could try tacking on the special ability of each Flagship onto its race's War Suns. Some of them will require some tweaking.

I've never considered this. It's an interesting idea.

The thing I like most about Flagships is that they dilute the value of Warsuns, making it so you don't HAVE to get Warsuns in order to compete on a galactic scale. This rule would undo that aspect of it, so I find it unappealing.

When playing with race that favors military I rather enjoy having a fleet based on 2 war suns and my flagship.

I would politely disagree with my fellow player that the Flagship is merely a nerfed Warsun. The Flagship concept brings a lot of variety to the table as each one is unique and can be used to play to the strengths of that specific race.

However, I don't see any particular benefit to replacing the Warsuns with two unique variants (the Flagship in question). In fact, I would be concerned about subsequent balance issues (imagine two Hil Colish ships activating their wormhole generators and then having two Creuss homeworld flotillas surrounding you in a pincer movement). There's a reason why there can be only one Flagship.

You should definitely play with the Flagships first before tinkering with the fleet design parameters. ..

I'd agree with the above that the flagship isn't a nerfed War Sun. The War Sun has a singular role: Invade and destroy. It carries troops and fighters. It destroys ground forces. It blows ships up by the handful. It's a whole fleet wrapped up in a single ship (though you'll escort it if you're wise). To remove that capability could be crippling for some races, because all flagships are not equal -- they're unique. Their role varies by whose you are using. Most of them dovetail with a race's abilities, either enhancing them or otherwise taking their cue from each race's play style. They aren't all that comparable to War Suns (except for Muaat's), really.

I'd definitely leave it be.

Warsuns are just a resource dumping ground for rich races. Let them build them, kill one, and let them build them again cool

I like your idea of getting rid of Warsuns in favor of Flagships, but I'd only let the race build one. Create a consort class of battle cruisers or fast cruisers (depending on the flagship speed) to accompany them.

Consort Battle Cruiser:
Cost: 6
Combat: 6x2
Move: 1
Carry: 2 (may not carry fighters).
Sustained Damage

Consort Escort Cruiser:
Cost: 3
Combat: 8x2
Move: 2
Carry: 1 (may not carry fighters).
Sustained Damage (need to rethink that?)

Anyway I have those for my game. One per race of one or the other. Don't get bought as much as they ought to.
