My son is in the 2nd grade, and when I visited his new classroom, the teacher had a wishlist of things she wanted in donation. I snagged the one that said "board games for indoor recess." My son is a super gamer and can play just about anything, but I want games that most everyone in the class can play. Suggestions for games with these criteria are appreciated:

-Can be learned/played independently by 7-8 year olds
-Durable
-Playable even with missing components
-Relatively inexpensive

Thanks in advance, Hivemind.

Both have math concepts. The teacher should love them.

Carcassonne without use of the farmer, at least at first.

Rat-a-Tat Cat and many others in the Gamewright catalog.

That old classic Yahtzee or one of its variants could also be a winner. You can copy the score sheets and pick up dice and plastic cups anywhere for cheap. The whole class could play at once.

Actually, if you were ambitious and creative you could even design your own themed versions using inset dice and stickers.

It has been a long time since I was in a second grade class room. For the games I'd wonder about playing on desks. Do desks have a flat surface onto which dice can be thrown? Or does school have tables around which the kids sit?

Does she have none?
I'd be surprised if didn't at least have a copy of
Connect Four.
They are so common and readily available at your local thrift shop for very little.
Very easy to grasp the concept in seconds. A few pieces lost and it's still playable.

I've got two suggestions for you.

Gubs is a huge hit with every child that plays it with me. This past weekend I played more games that I can count with my cousins' kids, ranging from 7-10 and they loved it.

Brave Rats, by Senji Kanai. Essentially War with a twist. My 5.5 year old loves it. Two players battle with identical 8 card decks, each card has a special ability that can come into play. Great quick game.

When I took Labyrinth with me to game night the younger kids seemed to like it, and it's a fairly simple game.
