I finally admitted the other day I don't know anything about 19th America. Started listening to a Civil War podcast that began before the Texas Revolution and the Mexican War. Unbelievable! This was great.

The podcast is up to 1856 now, so we're just about there. Fascinating stuff. Why don't I know more about this? Well, I can change that!

There are good books on each decade of the 19th Century, but I'm looking for something covering either the 50 or so years from the Mexican War to Reconstruction, or better from 1800 to 1899 USA.

Not necessarily a popular read, but a rewarding and informative one.

Thanks,

I'm not sure you'll be able to find what you are looking for, since the 19th century usually isn't treated as a whole, or broken up that way. Usually the end of the Civil War or the end of Reconstruction are taken as major break points. Perhaps you should start with a general history of the US, concentrating on those chapters on the 19th c.

i really enjoyed Oxford History of the American West which covers more time than just the 19th century but picks up on some structural elements and long term develeopments you won't find in many other history books more focussed on politics.

Obviously it doesn't talk much about the East coast.

This is an interesting look into the life of a craftsman in antebellum America. You're going to love this one. It illustrates what the common man might be up to during that era. This prankster is seemingly at war with his friends, drowning their dogs and such for comedic effect.

History of My Own Times; or, the Life and Adventures of William Otter, Sen., Comprising a Series of Events, and Musical Incidents Altogether Original.

Thanks. I looked this up. Is this historical, or just hysterical?

Thanks for the suggestions. More what I'm looking for is a history of what led to the ACW and what came after. I said 19th Century because I thought that would cover it.

I gotta believe there's something out there covering the military actions (Mexican War) the political actions (Missouri Compromise, etc.), not to mention the caning and fisticuffs in Congress, that preceded the Civil War. Nothing?

There are zillions (I counted) of books out there on the events leading up to the Civil War, but not many, I think, also cover the military actions of the Mexican War.

You could start with Allan Nevens, Ordeal of the Union, 4 vols.
Also Potter, The Impending Crisis
Freehling, Road to Disunion, 2 vols.
And many others.

What Hath God Wrought: The Transformation of America, 1815-1848

A deep, absorbing read - then read McPherson's Battle Cry of Freedom to get through the ACW.
