It's too easy for players to split up at the beginning and never meet until the end. A previously suggested variant that constrained the map to the ten towns on the Western side with 2 markers on each helped fix this, but the urge to use all the board was strong.

This variant works by initially making much of the board inaccessible, and opening up parts of it as the rounds go by. Players are forced to interact early on and as everyone can see the order in which areas open up, there is a race to claim the key routes needed!

[Instead of using the destination cards on the board, you can use facedown travel cards. Less aesthetically pleasing, but it will then let you use the destination cards as usual.]

Setup:

Put all the destination cards on their respective towns (12 of them round the outside). Towns with cards on them are considered 'locked' and inaccessible. Put out 8 player pieces, one on each of the unlocked towns in the centre. Put the unused pieces to one side for now.

Shuffle the four round cards as best as you can and deal one face up to each corner of the board. This will determine how the board will open up as the game plays out.

Beginning of each round:

Take off the 3 destination cards nearest the current round card (the first one will be the '1' card), and place some of the previously unused player pieces on the newly uncovered towns. Put the current round card onto its usual spot.

Travel restriction:

You cannot travel to towns that have destination cards on them and you cannot place travel tokens on roads that involve these locked towns.

Interesting. We just played the game 2P for the first time today. What do you think of the idea of playing a normal 2P game with the in-rulebook destination card variant with just one change : 3 rounds?

Hi Ben,

we tried you're variant and we've loved it. For the first time we actually enjoyed elfenland as a 2 player game.

So thank you for your idea.

As an extra we gave each player 3 trouble tiles in stead of 1, that we could use during the 4 rounds. This made it a lot harder and more interesting.

And the destination cards were sorted in 3 piles (each pile had 4 destinationcards, one out of each of the corners). Each player got a pile with 4 destinationcards and chose 2 cards. In the correct round we had to end on the correct city. So in stead of one time (at the end of the game), we did this twice during the game.

We're gonna play elfenland a lot more thanks to you.

with Kind Regards,

Caroline

Adding the trouble tiles sounds like a good move - more contention in a two player version, the better!
