By now, many hotels will be fully booked for SPIEL, so I think it will be difficult to find a hotel close by.

The Mövenpick Hotel near the train station usually has rooms available. It's not the closest, but it is a short metro ride to the fair.

B&B Essen still has two rooms for two people each left (non-smoker!), but you have to like the style of B&B. It's spartan and no restaurant etc.
We'll be staying there, because we booked just last week in a spontaneous action and we're alright with the system of B&B.
I don't know how the service of public transport to the Messe is, because we're there by car, but I heard it's not far from town center.

There are loads of rooms available on the Essen dates. Holiday Inn Essen City Centre has a double room available for 3 nights (thats if you check in on the 16th and check out on the 19th), just try Booking.com which seems to have tons of available options and guaranteed lowest prices.

Check out Arosa http://www.apparthaus-arosa.de/index.htm
it's a bit more expensive than B&B but you'll get a whole apartment, so kitchen, fridge and most importantly lot's of gaming space whistle
their page is in german, but they'll reply in english for sure!

As @SteveB said, booking.com has a bunch of rooms. Also it does depend on how much you wish to spend -- a big consideration in trying to recommend anything. The Atlantic Congress which is next to the Fair and reportedly has good after-hours gaming has rooms available. However they are expensive.
