Good Morning.

I am fleshing out a naval combat style card game. Right now I'm working on the vessel versus vessel combat rules which I'm trying to keep as simple as possible.

Right now my current working theory is this:

Each card has an offensive and defensive value something along the lines of...

Destroyer: 2 offense / 2 defense
Frigate: 1 offense / 2 defense
Merchant: 0 offense / 3 defense

Combat would be declared by the attacking player naming which ships would attack which ships. Such as their destroyer and frigate would engage the merchant. Since the merchant has 3 defense and the total offense against it is 3 the merchant is destroyed with no reciprocal damage to the attacker.

I'll also note that if the defending player has a destroyer or other combat vessel in play they can use it to defend with as well by various means such as playing an escort card as one example or using an evasive maneuver card.

Pretty easy to figure out for the player but has no random elements.

The other idea I'm kicking around is that attacking players roll a D10 with even being a hit, odd being a miss, to add a random element to combat to give the defender a chance to prevail in the above scenario.

Any input on this concept or any ideas I'm not thinking off?

I think even and odd will be inherently bad. It makes it a coin flip, and has no where to go for modifiers.

perhaps a special card deck instead of the D10, or, different 'conditions' on a table for each of the 10 possibilities.

you could have effects like, "heavy seas" -2 offense, "broadside profile" -1 defense, "use of smoke" +1 defense, "2 bracketed shots" +1 offense, etc.

Lucky Texan's comment made me think of Spearpoint 1943. Player's forces are card based, they roll dice for damage, BUT there is ALSO a damage deck of cards. So your tank might takes 8 hits from the dice, but the damage card says the gun is broken and it can no longer attack.
