Personally, my favourite franchise at the moment is AEG's Tempest: Shared World. I definitely want to see more games in that line, no matter what mechanics they use.

The day I notice the franchise associated with a product is the day that product has failed to be sufficiently interesting on its own rights.

I've no idea what "Hell on Wheels" is, so at this point I'm interested but unswayed on the game. If I knew that "Hell on Wheels" was a franchise, and that fact became noticeable as part of the game, then yes, I would think rather less of the game: it failed to stand on its own values and instead tried to parasitise something else's values.

I buy good games not good franchises. Though I'm sure there are a few of us who tend to like certain game families i.e. 18xx, COIN, Commands and Colors etc.

A franchise is about a theme, characters, and the environment. I agree, there are good games and bad games and I buy good games (at least until I play them once). This said, I think it is a mistake do not play a game because it is a franchise. There are great games of The Lord of the Rings, Star Wars...

Franchises being managed by FFG usually have pretty good games.

I was just thinking about franchises the other day, and came to realise that I'm actually put off by games with known names attached to them.

For me it came from realising that the reason I'm not interested in the X-wing miniatures game is BECAUSE it is a Star Wars game. I love Star Wars, and would assume that I'd love a game based on it, but instead I find the theme to be nothing but a hindrance to the game itself. Had this been a game based on a sci-to setting of some originality there would be far more scope for ships and rules.

I know that's only basing my opinion on one heavily franchised game, but it made me realise where my gaming interests are at. Franchises can be nothing but a burden on a game, sometimes.

When I see a franchise game, that sets up a red flag. I wonder immediately if the game company is hoping the appeal of the franchise will sell the game in spite of its flaws. That being said, being part of franchise doesn't dissuade me from buying a game-- I've bought 4 games this past year that fit in one or other of the franchises on the list, but in each case I took extra care to evaluate the game (most often by playing it) before buying.

Really I should put at least that much care into ANY game I buy, but I lack the wisdom and self control to do so.
