I was thinking about how to make the claiming of pump sites to be based more on how much a player wants a particular site rather than just whether the player manages to roll 4-6 or not. It also felt as if choosing your site each turn didn't feel like a particularly interesting decision (though I've only played with the fixed map setup - maybe this isn't so bad if you use variable setup).

Anyway, this was the idea I had. Comments welcome.

-----

Replace the "Place bonus resources" step with the "Place potential pump sites" step:

Starting with the First Player and going clockwise, each player rolls 1 red and and 1 blue D6. The player then places a face down claim token (of any colour; neutral is probably best) in the space on the board that corresponds to the dice roll, with the blue die representing the X-axis and the red die representing the Y-axis (ignoring the river).

If the player rolls doubles, the player may choose to either place the token on the board as normal OR place the token on the river space that corresponds to the die result (with "1" being the left-most river space and "6" being the right-most river space).

If the player rolls a location that already contains a token (either face up or face down), then no token is placed.

During the bidding phase, whenever a player wins a bid, instead of gaining a bonus resource, the player may choose to replace one of the face down tokens with his own claim token.

-----

The only thing is that with this variant, neutral claim tokens are pretty much unneeded. The Venturer role is still useful; maybe more so, even, so I might eliminate or at least reduce the "half price" bonus granted by that card to compensate a bit. I'm not sure what to do with Building Licences, though. Any ideas?

He's looking real sharp in his 1940's fedora. He's got nerves of steel, an iron will, and several other metal-themed attributes. His fur is water tight and he's always up for a fight.

He's a semi-aquatic egg-laying mammal of action. He's a furry little flat-foot who'll never flinch from a fray. He's got more than just mad skills, he's got a beaver tail and a bill.

I think I'll just end up not having a die roll at all. Blech.
