Like most awards (also outside of the board game hobby), it's just a guideline. A sticker on a product can be helpful to some people if they are looking for guidance. The same sticker could also be an effective marketing instrument. Either way, take it or leave it.

Over the years, the Spiel des Jahres award also lost its value for me personally, but they were clever enough to invent the Kennerspiel des Jahres award in 2011. Better late than never, right ?

It's still just a sticker with a different colour on a box for me, but I am happy if a good game (and the people behind it) gets the promotion it deserves.

Thinking about it... I actually do wonder about the who and how of this award.

Community choice ? Or did Tom roll a D20 ?

"Good" is impossible to define or measure clearly. If it won a Dice Tower award, some people must really like it.

Love dice tower! Watch it weekly!

Tom is such a great personality for the gaming industry! Very likable and not "threatening" if that makes sense.

But I find most of his highly awarded games just ok.
But thats ok.

He really gives you a great sense of the game. Then says how HE feels about it. Appreciate both!

Thanks Tom!

There are lots of games and lots of awards for games. Some awards are meaningful (SdJ in terms of sales), BGG Awards (for the BGG community), etc. Some are just because they got their game in the right people's hands.

I think most SdJ winners and nominees are definitely worth a play through. But I'm also a father of 4 kids so I'm the target market for that award. The KdJs are also worth a look. But just because it has the SdJ does it mean it's worth buying or playing a 2nd time.

There's full disclosure on the methodology and the panel of judges:

Yeah, I have no idea what game they are actually referring to either. Russian Railroads won their Best Strategy Game last year. While I don't think it's actually that great of a game there are a lot of people that do like it and it has won other awards as well.

Anybody wanna be a hero and highlight the awarded games? Or is that frowned upon so Tom can get his clicks?

The Dice Tower awards are fine as long as you accept the fact that they are heavily weighted towards American family style gaming. Tom's lists tend to be the ones I agree with most outside some of his convention favorite picks.

Just mentioning that the Dice Tower awards have nothing to do with Tom's preference. He doesn't even vote in them, save to break any ties that might come up. They are voted on by 40+ people with a range of tastes.

Of course many of the awards go to American style games. This is not because of a general preference towards the games, but because many of the awards recognise things like Artwork, components and theme - Something that American style games excel at.

However, if you look at the 2013 awards, you'll notice that Best Strategy Game went to Russian Railroads, with a bunch of other Euro's (like Bruges etc.) being nominated. Best game overall went to Caverna, a Euro game through and through.

It's funny: I made the same assumption about Tom's influence on the award. I only guessed 4 winners out of 14; because I tried to guess which one Tom liked best.

For reference: the 2013 awards:

Best Game Reprint: Ogre
Best Party Game: One Night Ultimate Werewolf
Best Game Artwork: Eldritch Horror
Best Game Components: Battlelore
Best Two Player Game: Battlelore
Best Co-op: Freedom: The Underground Railroad
Best Strategy Game: Russian Railroads
Best Expansion: Lords of Waterdeep: Scoundrels of Skullport
Best New Designer: Freedom: The Underground Railroad
Best Family Game: Forbidden Desert
Best Small Publisher: Euphoria: Build a Better Dystopia
Most Innovative Game: Rampage
Best Game Theming: Freedom: The Underground Railroad
Game Of The Year: Caverna: The Cave Farmer

I love the dice tower and it's network podcasts. Notice the microbadge on the left. I like how they have differing opinions which can really help you see many sides of a game. The dice towers awards are a good guideline for me to see how many people in general enjoyed a particular game for whatever the category was.

Not threatening? Is that an uncommon trait among board game reviewers? Where many of them ARE threatening?

I'm willing to play the spoiler here:

This thread is a reference to the very end of the most recent Dice Tower podcast (the "post credits stinger" if you will). The latter half of the episode was a spoiler-filled review of Risk: Legacy, and the hosts realized that only people who were okay with spoilers would still be listening at the end of the show, so Eric came up with a "secret handshake" that this thread is referencing.

If you want to understand the joke but don't want Risk: Legacy spoilers, you can listen to just the last 2 minutes or so of the September 16, 2014 Dice Tower podcast (the credits and beyond). There are no spoilers for the game in the credits or after.

I am among the most terrifying reviewers ever. Only explanation for why my reviews don't get more reads. *nods*
