King of New York looks more interesting than King of Tokyo.

The possible hexagon remake of http://boardgamegeek.com/image/2023489/factory-fun Factory Fun looks better than the original.

Roll for the Galaxy, Munchkin Adventure Time, Munchkin Panic, and Smash Up: Munchkin interest me.

Re: What game remakes or re-themes are better or look more interesting than the original?
Do you refer to professionally published rethemes or to free fan made ones (that can be found in the files sections)?

How far are you taking remakes & rethemes? I'm certainly interested in Roll for the Galaxy too, but I wouldn't describe it as a remake of Race for the Galaxy from what I've seen.

I've never played it but The Resistance: Avalon is the first thing which comes to mind (though the upcoming The Resistance: Hidden Agenda expansion which adds all the extra roles to the original).

Well, I can't deny that there's a major amount of truth in your statement.

Most of your examples are not remakes or rethemes at all, but I can think of a few examples. Of course, I think everything is better with a Fantasy or Sci-Fi theme, so...

Kingdoms (retheme of Auf Heller und Pfennig)
Atlanteon (Revolution)
Colossal Arena / Galaxy: The Dark Ages (Grand National Derby)
Small World (Vinci)

The remake of Fury of Dracula (2005). Like most Fantasy Flight releases the components and artwork are great quality and it also improved a few game mechanics of the original Fury of Dracula (1987) release.

You could probably add in another remake of an old Games Workshop game, Warrior Knights (2006), by Fantasy Flight as well. Although I only own the original so can't vouch for any improvements or lack of in the remake.

+1... FFG usually does a very nice job of re-visualizing titles.

Drakon
Age of War
Black Gold

Vinci to Small World was also nice.

The newest version of Cosmic Encounter is definitely the best.

Not sure if this fits with what you are talking about because it was made by a different company.

This should be a Geeklist.

Wallenstein (first edition)

Was remade in 2012 as

Wallenstein (second edition)

But Shogun is pretty neat.

+1 Vinci E Small World
+1 Netrunner E Android: Netrunner

Hart an der Grenze / Nottingham E Sheriff of Nottingham

Dominion E Dominion: Base Cards

Schotten Totten E Battle Line

Arkham Horror E Arkham Horror

Descent: Journeys in the Dark E Descent: Journeys in the Dark (Second Edition)

Tales of the Arabian Nights E Tales of the Arabian Nights

Arguably more into the "reimplementation" area:

Mr. Jack E Le Fantôme de l'Opéra (well, same base idea)

Escape: The Curse of the Temple WE Escape: Zombie City (both great)

I have not played it yet, but I guess Risk E Risk Legacy ?
Same may be true to the Thunderstone series.
Fans of the Munchkin series definitely have a broad selection of themed expansion.

Granted, it may be a bit far stretched, but I am also thinking Catan E Starfarers of Catan

And, of course, the classic: Memory E Busen Memo

Although I'm a fan of neither, another gamer who is a fan of it said while he enjoys playing Funkenschlag, Power Grid is much improved and the more definitive version.
