Someone gave me 88gg for a rules translation and all I got was this lousy overtext

Played this at my games club last night,
We had me with Vikings, Daf with Rome and Mark with Persia.

We all opened with the classic yellow tech, happy settlement, collect, I decided to gamble on no irrigation and take fishing, giving me the ability to convert my settlers to boats, and vice versa, I followed up with (now free) navigation, and started sending ships around the map and setting up trade routes.

Rome went all out for advances, while Persia started to build elephants.

A group of barbarian settlements sprung up between myself and Rome, and I sent my leader out, Ragnar Lodbrook, intending to capitalise on his +2 gold for capturing a city ability.

While Vikings are free to convert ships into infantry or settlers, you cannot do this into an enemy occupied space, which slowed down my attack a little. Rome appeared unnerved by troops arriving nearby and invested in army units, with a mix of cavalry, infantry and elephants.

I managed to defeat the first barbarian settlement, at this point I had had several 2 vs 1 dice battles with barbarians and pirates, and had lost a unit each timecry, seeing the roman army nearby I built up to 4 infantry units in the captured settlement, Rome decided to go in for the kill and my poor luck in battle continued, as I rolled one hit on 4 dice, only to have it cancelled by an elephant, while losing 3 units, losing the settlement and all my troops and leader, with a full strength roman army now threatening my largest home city.

The roman leader's ability to pay a culture token to have a captured city revert to happy turned out to be very useful.

Meanwhile Persia sneaked some troops around and captured one of my port settlements.

The income from trade routes helped me get my army back up to strength, so I recaptured my port, and re-enforced my city, Also taking an unoccupied Persian city by sea landing in order to fulfill an objective card.

In the final throes, Rome once again got the better dice and took my size 4 city, but I did reduce his army this time and managed to recapture on the final turn, which I had planned to spend upgrading to size 5 for another objective. Persia managed to get the resources together to build the game's only wonder while Rome and the Vikings were otherwise engaged.

Final scores were 32 Rome, 28.5 Vikings and 23 Persia.

My thoughts on the expansion.

This was already one of my favorite games, and the expansion has improved things, a good example of expansion done right, there were no elements that I felt I would rather do without, nothing overly complex or unwieldy, or out of balance.

I've seen concern that the free advances available to the civs might lead to a more scripted game than before, but I don't see this being the case, firstly there are 14 different civs, unless you had 14 broadly different strategy outlines chances are you will be trying new things. Add to this that each faction has 3 leaders, each again pushing you towards a slightly different route. As before your action and objective cards will also contribute towards steering your decisions, the overall result I.M.O. is that you will likely have more overall game to game diversity than you would have had without the use of the new civs.

Arrgh, why does England get this first and not America?

I blame Danelaw.

I don't own the game yet Mike, but the rules are available online. The rules have a section of more in-depth explanation of the special advances and 13 of the 14 civs have explanations there. Huns are present in that section, but not the Mongols. Is it possible that the Mongols are the 14th faction? Perhaps someone who owns the game can confirm, yeah or nay.

This thread thinks it's the Phoenicians:

Did not see that. The leaders are there too. Nice!

Phoenicia is confirmed, then. No Mongols.

Thanks... thanks for making me sad I mean. LOL! Sounds like I've been setup for a second expansion. This one sure looks like it has a lot of play in it, however.

There were mongols at some point, but they morphed into the Huns with much of the same powers, with the central idea being the nomadic horse-people. I think one of the reasons was the timeline issue, with mongols not becoming an empire until the 13th century, and that would place them quite late in terms of the available advances in the base game. Huns fit more in line with most of the other civilizations timewise.

My understanding is that the shipment had arrived in the US, but you threw it in the ocean out of habit.

That's a pretty poor attempt at humour - it comes across as insulting.

My apologies if anyone was insulted by my comment. It was an attempt at creating an absurd link between the American Declaration of Independence and the current shipping delay. It was not my intention to diminish the actions of the original protestors, or to imply that it is still happening but for arbitrary reasons.

Not to me. I actually fail to see why it would be insulting at all. Just a little absurd.

Seemed amusing and harmless enough to me. I've heard much worse from my own countrymen.

+1 In fact, I'm probably one of those "countrymen" you speak of as such. I thought the comment was funny.
